I've gone through my first tank of gas in my new 2008 XT. I got 140 miles on the tank; with about 75% of the miles on the freeway. That seems REALLY low, even for a new motorcycle that states fuel economy as 47/59.

Is this "normal" for a brand new Buell? The bike had 6 miles on the odometer when I bought it.

I thought I would get 160-170 miles on the tank in the beginning, if not more, with improvement as I put on miles.

Thanks for any info.

Give it a few thousand miles. Your fuel consumption may be high, but it is too early to tell.

Ok 2 things

It will get better over time. Once it breaks in it will be smoother and get better fuel economy

Your bike probably needs to be flashed to the latest ecm program. Most people reported better fuel economy with the update. Take it to the dealer for this. Watch out as some dealers will charge labor for it even thou the flash itself is not chargable

Ah, yes. I have read about this reflash. Is there some "code" or number? I can't remember.

I'll probably go through a couple more tanks to see if there is any improvement. But approx. 30-32 mpg is a bit low, especially when most of my riding has been freeway (70mph @ 3500 rpms).

Thanks.

My XT I picked up one month ago. It was manufactured in late July.

They assured me it had the latest flash, and the speedo probably agrees since it is 3-4 mph fast like others are reporting.

I have just turned 1700 miles on it. I have ranged from 33-44 mpg. My last 250 miles I got 40mpg at 80mph interstate speeds.

The engine really loosens up with every 500 miles you put on it. I'm amazed at how similar in performance it is to my XB12s after break in. I just wish I got closer in mileage to what it should be.

Doesn't matter, it's a sweet bike, and I hope to get at least another 1000 miles on it before the snow flies!!

Check out my Uly Data Page... (Feel free to add your data to the DB).

You'll see that the 2008's are noticeably lower than the '06 or '07. I blame the newer fuel injection DDFI3. The reflash makes no change to the fuel or timing maps per Buell Customer Support (and my own investigation).

The EPA numbers (51 -64) are wishful thinking.

If you have an '08 and you're averaging above 40 MPG you are doing well.

So in your opinion the reflash will not improve fuel economy?

I have an '08 and I consistently get 43 MPG. Last two tankfuls, I got 45 MPG. My '06 Uly averaged 48-50 MPG in the summer months.
I haven't got the re-flash yet.

I have an 06 and have never gone below 50mpg even on the highway with the bags on. BUT, my mileage has been getting worse lately coinciding with the 10% ethanol fuel.

"So in your opinion the reflash will not improve fuel economy?"

Some say that they have seen an improvement. You would need more than one or two tank fulls to make a good comparison. I have not gotten the reflash (my Uly runs fine) after the flash you can no longer reliably read the ecm with ecmspy. I compared my fuel/timing maps with those from another Uly that had the flash and the maps were identical. My Dealer spoke to Buell/HD and they said the flash would have little if any impact on fuel economy. I'm not sure what they changed in the ecm but it doesn't look like they touched the fuel/timing maps. Not sure what else in the ecm would matter regarding fuel economy?

Thanks. I'm going to see how things go until I reach 500-750 miles on the bike. If it's still in the low to mid 30s then I'll talk with the dealership about the reflash (to be done during my 1,000 mile service).

If I take the side bags off, I can pull, on average 2mpg better. 47-49mpg with the bags off and 44-47 with bags on. 90% hwy riding, at 70-75mph. I have not gotten the reflash yet.
And I upshift at or around 3000-3500rpm range.

My reflash added like four miles per gallon but made it run a lot better.
It used to have this sucky off idle stumble.
it's nice and smooth now.
Milage is slightly improving with use.
My average is about 45 now.
When I first got the bike, it was in the low 30's!

I'm getting around 45 to 47. That's with my 220 lbs and about half the time the wife on as well.....and bags....with a mix of rural and town driving. As my alternative is a F-450 that gets about 10mpg I'm pretty damn happy about my Uly! BTW April 08 MFG date, no reflash and happy with how it runs

It will, you just haven't even ridden it long enough to get a bug on the windshield.

I have the 08 with the reflash done at 3500 miles. I may be getting 1 MPG more after the reflash, or it may be just that the bike is breaking in better.

But I only get 40 MPG - on just about every tank. Of course, all my rides are about the same - 100 mile - 2 hour - back road cruising.

Mileage sucks, motor runs great. Annoying range, but I can live with it. If range is an issue, then strap gas cans to your passenger footpegs.....
