Any thoughts on DS type tyre?

TKC80s are not available in 17" at this time.

Just beginning the search, any thoughts/input will be appreciated.

well, for starters you should brew a pot of coffee and do a search on this forum, then spend all night reading the bazillion posts on it :-)
seriously though, no real knobby-like tires. Pirelli MT60's and Avon Distanzias are about the closest, with both rears only available in a 160 width. It will fit apparently with some persuasion. There's a supermoto tire with a bit more tread but it is a soft compound and the rear goes in about 1000 miles.
This does not seem to keep the Uly off dirt roads, however, as some folks have ridden theirs quite a few places!
I am tempted to buy an old S1 Lightning and make a monster dirtbike out of it, like the bmw HP2. Rake the front end some, motocross forks/wheel, long swingarm...full knobbies... fun toy. And I'd be saving it from the chopper farm in the sky too.
I think you will find your answer in the previous postings. Should you find a knobby in 17" size, please post it here. Maybe eventually there will be one, who knows? With the growth in supermoto bike's popularity it could happen.

There are french tires that would work, but they are not available here.

I've often thought that were there enough folks we might be able to get the Tomahawk folk to construct a knobby tire on a sportbike tire carcass.

Ok BDS, I guess I should have know you would have done a search. Sorry 'bout that. I've also been looking here regularly hoping to find a compromise tire that is more offroad-worthy. I've seen some of the places people ride 1150GS bikes and the Buell seems much lighter and nimble to me, despite all the folks here that always say the Buell is a roadbike more than adventure bike. I keep hoping with all the supermoto styled bikes coming out, all with 17" rims, that tire mfr's will make 17" knobbies for those who want to use a supermoto as a dualsport. Sounds logical, doesn't it? ok, back to the S1 brainstorming now.....

Maybe they should put a tire shoot out up int the KV, I know this one gets around a bit. The syncs are moderate for cross pavement and gravel, but get the job done. The Mt-60s are good for mud and more aggressive gravel. The distinzias seem to wash out and plane out at 45-52 mph for me on loose gravel (I DO NOT LIKE THAT!) And somebody is running a set of TKCs on a ULY but they had to remove the front lower fender set to do it. I know there is a pic. Too lazy to search..... +1 for the KV Tire shoot out. Your one stop for tire tread wear life issues for selected models.

I saw the TKC attempt on ADVrider. He used a 130 width on the front (smallest available). He had to remove the lower fender, trim the sides of the lugs and still had some pretty serious rubbing issues. IIRC, he decided that it was not a good idea and took them off.

I have a set of Distanzia's on my Uly right now with about 2000 miles on them. The rear looks like it should be good for another 1500, maybe 2000 miles. Front is in good shape. I am in the 300# range and not a gentle rider.

On pavement, these tires are wonderful. I have not felt any unexpected slips nor slides, regardless of whether the roads are wet or dry. They just flat out stick. I have noticed significantly more noise from these tires on pavement than the Synchs, but this is a non-issue to me (I also drive a Jeep with mud tires).

In the dirt, the Distanzia's are worlds apart from the Synch's. Much better grip on softer dirt and feel much more planted. Some have said they float on gravel at higher speeds; I have not noticed anything worse than the Synch's at speeds up to about 60. I have not tried the Distanzia's at reduced pressure yet.

Here are a few pics from some of the dirt roads I have been on. Not real tough, but then, I never remember to stop to take pictures when the going gets rough.

Hope the new Moto Guzzi Stelvio will sell pretty good. Has the same rear size as the Uly. I think, if so the tire manufacturers will wake up and provide us with long lasting and off- road matching tires. Ride safe Werner

Its not the hard pack forest roads that get ya, its the county access pea gravel and shale roads that they seem to wash out, and unfortunately right at the speed I love to run at 45-52 mph. The front wants to cut under or slide in a turn and the rear seems to rooster more than the Syncs or the Mt60s. Maybe I should lay off the gas?!?!? nah ; )
