How fast can you go on the XT without feeling that the bike is pushing it's limit? I can only go up 60mph on my 99 Sportster when I wish that it had a 6th gear.

I've got an X, not an XT, but I think you'll find that the XT is in another league altogether. Your Sporty has the solid engine mounts, and that's probably the reason you feel like you need another gear, to get the revs (and therefore the vibes) down. The Sporty-engined Buells use an engine mounting system that smooths out real nice anywhere above 2000rpm. Even riding sedately, when I reach 60 on my X I'm comfortably in third gear and the bike has plenty more.

I cruise at 80 on the interstate for over 100 miles at a time and the XT is breathing easy the whole way. In fact, very little vibration.

Unlike the Sporty, Buell vibration is worst at idle...it smooths out with increasing engine speed.

I don't mind the vibration, I'm looking for another ride that will give me higher speed,comfort for both rider and passenger for a longer distance.

I'm not sure what you mean by bottoming out. I have an XT. You might say that the XT is Harley Davidson's "real" Sportster. Lots of cornering clearance, totally buttoned down suspension, lots of get up and go, very comfortable two up, copious luggage capacity. Set the suspension up for the load you are carrying (it's all in the owners manual) and it is the most competent two up tourer you can imagine.

I have cruised at well over 90 for fifty or so miles at a time on the super slabs. Very smooth, very stable. Running at about 4500 rpms. I have an '06 X with all of the luggage and loaded the bike heavy for a long trip.

Cruising at 75-80 it's just loafing along. I did that for 6 hours in the rain a few weeks ago, arrived at my destination feeling as fresh as when I had gotten on. Rode all day touring around the twisties with friends the next day, very stable and comfortable. Then 6 hours back home the day after. July 10th I'm off for a 10+/- hour ride to Deal's Gap, I can hardly wait....

The XT tours well, bops 'round town and rips twisties like nobody's business, single or 2up. It's nothing like your Sporty.

It is not buzzy at speed and does not appear to need a sixth gear. In fact I find I'm hardly ever in fifth, but then I don't slab much. Third gear seems to be my fav for most of my driving fun.

In March I took a two up trip with the wife to Death Valley. We were fully loaded with camping gear. Crossing Nevada from north to south and back again is endless miles of slab and you may see another vehicle every 15 minutes or so. I came up on a semi going uphill and into a headwind. With limited visibility and passing opportunity, I notched the Uly down into fourth and proceeded around the truck. He was going much faster than I had first estimated and the wind was blowing off his nose at just the right angle to push us back. I looked down at my dash when we finally got around him and clicked back up to 5th at a touch over 110mph. No sixth gear required...and I gotta be more careful!

Easy to solve. Just add one of the Garmin GPS units with XM Satellite radio. Add one of the "manual" cruise control units.}

I did exactly that and the only thing I need is a more comfortable set of earplugs. Kaoke cruise and a Garmin 376C.

Having a sporty and a buell in the garage is nice,
2005 XL883R 10000 miles
2006 XB9SX 20915 miles

Guess which one gets out to ride more ; ) that is a pure function of fun, handling, versatility and rugged adventure riding.

I will never trade the sporty, but the Buell is the one that gets all of my attention ; )

I'm with Barker on this one. I never use 5th gear unless I'm slabbing it, and even then you have to be running 80mph before you're in the power.
