I just got an email from Triumph motorcycles USA and this is taken straight from the email: Hollywood legend Steve McQueen (1930-1980) is still one of the most charismatic movie actors of modern times. An Avid motorcyclist and Triumph enthusiast, he preformed the most notorious motorcycle jump in history when filming "The Great Escape." McQueen represented the USA on a Triumph Bonneville in the International Six Day Trials in East Germany, which saw the team return with three medals. McQueen's status as the "King of Cool" remains with him after all these years, proven when he was recently crowned as the Most Iconic Biker of All Time. Triumph Motocycles have taken inspiration from a tee worn by McQueen whilst racing on one of his beloved Triumphs. Anyway, Steve is the coolest but he did not make that jump in "The Great Escape" and Triumph knows it. The late great Bud Ekins made that jump. Steve probably could of made that jump but the fact remains that his friend Bud made it for him. From what I've read in several sources, he wanted to make the jump, but his movie contract wouldn't let him. It is a shame when a company has to fib in order to try to sell stuff. Wayne | ||

My riding buddy just bought a new 2007 Tiger. Steve McQueen had nothing to do with it. It was a great "out-the-door" price that included the bags, 100+ horses at the rear wheel and a repairable final drive. | ||

Steve McQueen rules. Seeing him just bombing around in "On Any Sunday" was the best. Too bad we don't have movie stars that are normal folks like that nowadays. And by the way, I am getting my bearings replaced tomorrow, after 7,000 miles on the bike. Pisser. | ||

One more thought... many of the great old movie stars served, even volunteered for the military....not going to happen with the bunch in Hollywood these days. My original rear bearings crapped at at 13K. | ||

Hey Tank how ya doin' I fried a left side bearing on the rental in Alaska! Had to finish the trip on a 650 V-strom........Quite a bit different from the Uly but it did ok. The rental company was great and bent over backward to not let the glitch screw up the trip. Tim |
