Hi Folks, I'm getting ready to purchase a new 2006 Uly. I will be immediately taking it out on the road (it is a fly-buy-ride deal I'm rolling into a family trip). The dealer said that the recalls for the kickstand and the BAS will be taken care of before I pick it up. I plan to follow the break-in procedure as discussed in the 2007 owner's manual. I have read through many of the threads here and at AdvRider concerning some of the issues folks have had with the '06 bikes and with some of the dealers. Does it seem foolhardy to embark on a cross-country trip on a new bike? The dealer mentioned a 1,000 mile service, do you think that I will be able to get the bike serviced under warranty as I motor from state to state? Any specific spare parts I should carry along? Any advice? Am I crazy? | ||

Take a copy of the RAN with you before you leave! It's just been updated. Have fun and post your adventure when you get home! | ||

I flew from Orlando to Appleton, WI and rode my Uly home in May '06. I had no qualms in doing this trip. I stopped at a dealership in Tenn. to have the engine oil and primary oil changed at around 1000 miles. I had my BRAG/HOG atlas thing and a copy of the RAN with me, no extra tools, parts. Frank | ||

The 1000 mile service is preventative maintenance (not warranty work). Any authorized Buell dealer should be able to do it. Any specific spare parts I should carry along? Any advice? Am I crazy? No, you are not crazy. As mentioned above print a copy of the RAN and have fun! Take pictures and post a report on your journey. | ||

Congratulations - Above advice is great. Now ask the question about breaking it in and have the fun of reading the answers. Have a wonderful adventure and also take lots of pics for us that are stuck at the desk. | ||

No problems with the new bike cross country, but just keep in mind that ALL bikes are like boats. Sometimes it takes a "shakedown cruise" to get all the bugs worked out. I wouldn't expect any trip enders, but keep an eye out for anything "odd". I had a bad BAS (you shouldn't have this problem) and a "Check Oil" light that came on intermittently. The light was related to a loose battery connection. The RAN is a good idea for any cross country trip not just with a new bike. Congrats on the new bike and welcome to BadWeb! | ||

To all: Thanks for the info on the RAN and the moral support.  What is the collective opinion on the extended warranty? Worth the dough? I have talked to three different dealers and got three different answers. Dealer A told me it was $2,300; Dealer B told me it was $1,895; Dealer C told me it was $900. To me it is hard to determine the monetary value of a plan that is a fiscal moving target. Also, not familiar with RSS  | ||

Warranty work you can get done at any Buell dealer. The 1000 mile service can also be done at any Buell dealer, but it isn't warranty work. You should make an appointment for the 1000 mile service if you know where you're going to be. If you just walk in off the street, it might take them a very long time (days) to get to you. | ||

I wouldn't purchase the extended warranty now. If it's new you have two years. If you're having some problems near the end of two years, go ahead and buy the warranty. Otherwise, save your money. | ||

Many riders have found by default they end up doing their own service work and repairs after they have owned the Uly for a while. And they have seen what can be done with the help you can get here and from Buell customer service. Some had purchased the extended warranty and found out that it was only good at that particular dealer or other dealers were just too far away. Then they found out that dealer had a service department that sucked and their extra money was lost. I do most of my own work(except for recall and warranty) so I don't go for the extra expense. At $1800 you could replace a lot of if needed parts after the two year warranty runs out. | ||

Ulywife you just gave me a flashback. I haven't been called Bert since the early 80's in the Marines. I'll add my name to the list shortly. I've been reading through the service manual. I always familiarize myself with the machine incase something does happen. Funny what can be done in a pinch if needed just to get you by. Smolt if you have any mechanical ability I'd get the manual and have it with me on the trip with an extended tool kit. | ||

Extended warrentee is not an option in my opinion. The dealerships don't want to work on them and don't know how anyway. Buy the shop manual, put some washers under your battery bolts and make sure the bike has had proper set up and suspension adjustment before you take delivery. Put a small bottle of blue loctite under the seat and have the time of your life! |
