...and ended up riding home on a new '06 Barricade Orange Uly with bags and topcase. First impressions in 40 miles of riding:

Very similar to S3T riding wise, maybe geared a bit taller, but definitely more refined. This thing will EAT miles! It is super smooth, even moreso than my 04 12R. It is very confidence inspiring. I love the long travel suspension, it rides like a sporty cadillac. I can definitely see myself investing in a tall windshield.

I have no problems with the Dunlops, but I can see how someone who is not used to riding a tall DS type bike would think they are a bit squirrely.

The seat height is not a problem. It takes a little getting used to, but again since I cut my teeth on DS bikes it is not an issue.

I will be putting more miles on it next weekend when we roadtrip to VT.

I will be keeping my S3T, but the 12R is going to need a new home to help finance the new scoot. I love the 12R but for the type of riding I do, the Uly just makes tons more sense.

This is me.

Congratulations. It's my opinion that the Uly is the best motorcycle on the market today and I'm sure you'll enjoy many miles on it.

"I have no problems with the Dunlops, but I can see how someone who is not used to riding a tall DS type bike would think they are a bit squirrely."

I've always been a tall DS guy and the 616's are the most squirrely tire I've ever had on any bike. I've had 90/10 dirt/street knobbies that didn't slip as much as these things. Suspension settings don't matter, tire pressures don't matter. They just are not predictable any more. I started off liking them, but after 3K they went downhill fast! Don't put too much faith in them Johnny. I will finally have my new shoes on next weekend.

By the way, your bar ends and Aprilia mirrors make a wonderful combination.

mr. lunchbox- congrats on the new ride. i agree with jmhinkle about the tires. one thing about the uly i'm discovering is what a good two-up bike it is. took the wife out mothers day for a couple hundred miles and she loved it! (just in case there is a mrs. lunchbox).

BTW i love my bar-end weights, thanks.

Congrats on the new ride! And you got the Sexier ORANGE version! The more you ride it, the more you're going to like it.
Everybody likes to dump on the D616s, but the set on my Uly worked well even up to 100 MPH, didn't wander or feel squirrelly and lasted 7500 miles.
Anyway, enjoy your new bike! (You should ride it out to Homecoming in July)

Congratulations on the new bike-I agree with Thelumox about two up traveling (which is not my favorite way to ride). When my Sara my fiance' and I went out to test ride Buells, we went on my Uly.(Sara ended up purchasing a new Scg and is now selling her BMW F650GS.) She said that she felt the Uly was as/or more comfortable and as nice as the 01 goldwing that I sold in when I moved up to the Uly. She said the Uly was more fun as a pasanger. I was suprised when she said that. I also found that the Uly handles bettter with a passenger than the wing did. I just did not feel as if I had a passenger on the Uly where the wing I was aware of the slight movements from Sara on the back. I also take a long trip of ten days once per year, often cross country either west coast to east cost or Nova Scotia to Gulf of Mexico and I will not hesitate to take the Uly on the one next fall.
