Does anyone have any impressions of the 'Buell' labeled quest system? Why would I want to buy this over other systems? What system is better?

I really like my Quest (non buell labelled). The Buell version adds some cost, but has all the mounting all worked out and has the splash screen.

Nothing you can't do on your own or that is any big deal, but it is all nicely sorted. And if you buy it with the bike, you can finance it I suppose, and the dealer may install it for you for that cost. That may be worth the extra $$ for some people.

Not sure if the Buell kit includes the car and wall adapter and the desktop software DVD that the normal quest kit includes.

I've been watching these guys on ebay try and sell this one for quite some time: 260038645092

Just curious - what did you pay for yours including all the set up hardware?

I have the Harley Conquest model. It has 2GB internal memory with 500mb free for user maps. Unlike the Quest the Conquest has all of the US loaded in memory. It is more expensive than the Quest but more features. It is I believe basically the Quest II but rebranded the Conquest for Harley. I bought it when I got my '07 Electra Glide and when I bought my '06 Uly a month and a half later I bought the mounting and wiring harness for the Buell so I could use it on both. It does everything I need it to do. Plus it is small enough to carry around.

If you want to look into a Conquest someone was selling a brand new one in the Classifieds.

Lucas70374 is the seller.

Because it says it has 115mb of storage memory, you can tell that the one on eBay is the Quest, not the newer Quest II

http://www.garmin.com/products/quest/

The original Quest will store detail maps for an area of like one state or so, maybe two, and then you have to go back to a PC and load a new map from the DVD that comes with it to continue the trip.

http://www.garmin.com/products/quest2/

The Quest II stores the detail maps for all of North America. It be more bettah.

I think about $250-300 is about the most anyone should pay for a new Quest, even if it does say Buell on it.

But If I was going to spend around $325-350 I'd look for the StreetPilot 2610 refurb. Better unit, uses external memory, and a proven reliable performer on bikes.

The Garmin zumo 550 at around $750 is probably one of the best choices if you want a newer one with all the latest bells and whistles (bluetooth, XM, FM traffic reports, etc.).

It would appear that the Quest II elimintes the major objection that I had to the original Quest (low levels of system memory, limiting the amount of detail maps you could load).

I'm Running a 2730 + the XM antenna on mine in a Touratech setup mounted on the crossbar. I'll post pictures of my Uly cockpit this afternoon...

I paid $309 for my quest last year, but that was a refurb. It had some risk but turned out fine.

I got the Ram snap on cradle ($9 or something?) and fabricated a bracket to mount that to the mirror post hole (free). I then cut up the quest AC wall mount adapter (included) and built a 5v regulator from scratch parts ($5) and wired that into the bike.

So if you exclude my time, I got the whole thing up and running for under $350. If you count my time, it was about $1000 : )

I will second the recomendation for the Garmin Zumo. It has been built with a motorcycle in mind from the start. It's feture list is quite impressive for not too much more money than the Buell Quest MSRP.

And for the record, the Quest with it's limited memory happily stored detailed maps for a trip from Lebanon Ohio to Deals Gap, including Franklin NC and Maggie valley.

It's limited memory would be an issue for some people, but it will be a complete non issue for many others, and would be a minor issue for most.

"..that was a refurb. It had some risk..."

Actually the risk on the Garmin refurbs is practically nil. They come with a one year warranty just like the new ones. And I never heard anyone say that they got a refurb that showed any signs of previous use.

The refurbs can be quite a bargain in that some of them will also come with the latest version (V8) of City Navigator too giving you the latest detail maps for free.

After running a gpsV for a few year, I finally bought a refurbished 2610. It looks new, has v8 software, and with a 1.5 gig card, it holds all of the US and Canada. Recalculating is rocket fast compared to the V, and the screen is really easy to see. I put the protective film for a pda on the screen, and like it a lot. Glad I got it (335.00) instead of the quest.

I will third the Zumo. Its down to $725 shipped to your door with car and motorcycle mount, and a long list of extras and features. I have not used mine on the bike yet but I love it so far in the car. If I only had an Aux input in the car I would pop the $220 for the XM reciever and rock to some tunes also. Oh and a subscription of course.

If you do get the Quest, installation is a lot easier if you reverse the order as written in the instructions. The leads that connect to the bike's wiring are too fat to tuck under the instrument panel.

That XM weather radar option on the Zumo is a great idea for motorcycles, but $100 a month?

Every thing else seems great.

Does anyone know anything about a Magellan Roadmate 800 Touch Screen GPS. I found some for $329.95 http://www.refurbdepot.com/productdetails2.cfm?Pro duct_ID=4449

Don't know about that particular one. When I was asking the question, the Magellans seemed to be good units, but a not quite as polished as the Garmins.

The deal breaker for me was that fact that for closely priced Garmin versus Magellan units, the Magellans (at the time) required $100 more software after I bought the unit before they would do proper turn by turn directions. At the time I bought, external memory was a lot more expensive as well... now it's cheap so adding that is a lot less of an issue.

That probably changed, but make sure you know what you are getting. $329 is a *complete* Quest 1 with a complete car mounting kit out the door and on your doorstep, as well as all the parts you need to build a decent motorcycle mount.

That Roadmate might get you the "way over the shoulder" view that you have to get a high end Garmin to get though (i.e. Zumo). It puts a lot more useful information on the screen then the straight overhead birds eye view that the Quest gives. Both are highly usable though.

Ahh! I actually followed the link and looked at the thing...

Looks like a nice car unit, but I would not be putting anything with a hard drive on the bars of a motorcycle, and it does not look very waterproof.

Lots of nice features for a car unit though, but you are trading highly functional things (waterproof durability) for less more gimmicky things (mp3 player, 20 gigs storage when you only need 1 gig for the whole US). Might make sense for some people, but probably not for a motorcycle.

I bought my '06 Uly a month and a half later I bought the mounting and wiring harness for the Buell so I could use it on both.

I thought they wouldn't sell the mounting hardware on it's own?

"I thought they wouldn't sell the mounting hardware on it's own?"

it's now available through Buell. Josh Cox from Cycle Connection can get it for you. He has the list of part numbers that is needed to fit it to the Buell XB12X Ulysses.

Interesting! I have been trying to find a cheap source for that little plastic connector between the actual wire and the actual quest (it screws into the mounting bracket)...

Its only available from Garmin as part of a $$ kit.

Yes it will. My Conquest is the Quest II and I had them install the Buell Mounting hardware on my Uly so I could use my Conquest (Quest II) from my Electra Glide on my Buell. Both models are the same form factor, etc.

Cujo,

You can probably put the same mounting system together by buying the parts from a RAM dealer yourself. Maybe cheaper too.

If you look at the zumo mounting instructions you can see the pieces and how they are used.

The vertical mount with the ball on top of it is the RAM-B-309-1 Universal Motorcycle Mount ($18.64). That comes with the two cylindrical spacers, longer screws, and lock washers.

The spacers are needed only for the clutch side mount on some bikes. The RAM catalog implies that the bracket will fit the right side on a Buell without the spacers.

For your Quest or Quest II you would also need are a RAM-HOL-GA15U ($11.21) cradle, a RAM-B-238U ($8.35) universal base with a ball that would attach to the cradle, and a RAM-B-201U ($12.95) double ball socket arm. The arm is also available in other lengths.

A Garmin zumo mount kit would have cradle that is not the same as a Quest cradle.

The parts mentioned above work out to about $51 at http://www.gpscity.com. RAM does not sell direct, if you start looking at parts at GPS City, it links you to the RAM pages for the parts info and prices.

The hardest to find/most expensive piece for a Quest is the proprietary electrical connector and DC-DC adapter because the Quest needs a regulated 5VDC input through a one of a kind proprietary plug.

If you already have the power cable you can use that of course. If you have to buy one, Garmin sells about half a mounting kit for $72.50 whereas RAM has a everything needed offering for $113.36.

Jack, Krassh,

Thanks for the info. The thing I like about the Buell kit is the power cord plugs into the wiring harness. No scotchlock or soldering. I guess I'll have to decide if not having to cut into the wire harness is worth the extra money.

Sanchez,

The short answer is that you have to use Garmin's antenna with the zumo.

The $200 Garmin antenna is a "smart antenna". It houses both the XM antenna and a receiver. The controls for the receiver are built into the zumo hardware so the Garmin GXM 30 smart antenna does not have any controls on it.

The GXM 30 connects to the zumo's mini-USB connector. The zumo controls the receiver and creates the XM audio tracks. The XM audio is just one of the audio inputs the zumo controls. The zumo switches the audio you hear between voice driving prompts, XM radio, the MP3 player, and the Bluetooth phone inputs.

So the bottom line is that I don't think there is any way to put the audio output from a regular XM receiver into the zumo and use that instead of using the Garmin receiver.
