55spy,

Thanks for the input. I may just put the lights on my stock Uly hand guards. I think it may be easiest to stay with a standard bulb type rather than LEDs since that is what is in the stock turn signals.

GOTJ,

Look for a way to use the current lense then since it's DOT approved, unless you are thumbing your nose at the whole DOT thing....like maybe Treadmarks....???

I still love the lights and am probably going to do something similar once I get one toy sold so I can pick up this Uly I've got my eyes on.

55spy,

I'm getting a little confused. You suggested "small LED indicators" with the Acerbis handguards earlier. Would they meet DOT requirements or was that with the "current lens" you suggest in your most recent post? If so, how did you envision doing that with the LED? My concept is an amber clearance light with a bulb. Wouldn't that meet the essence of the DOT requirements in terms of brightness and color? If not, what are the requirements?

Requirements depend on your state. When I lived in Cali the lense had to have the DOT stamp/casting on it. Each state is different, you'll have to check your local code.

As for the LED I meant that the Acerbis lights are not DOT legal and they are the standard bulb but they are dim because of the lense material I believe. we could never get them to light well and teh construction was poor in my opinion (it is basically a standard Acerbis Rally with a hole drilled in it and a press in housing. Nowhere internal for the lines to run and the light housing would popped out all the time)

There are companies that make LED replacement bulbs with the same plug adapter to fit oem housings. they are brighter and smaller and last longer. and can be used with your DOT legal housing. some companies also make custom housings also rarely DOT legal, but smaller flush mount screwback or thread through designs.

http://www.customled.com/PRODUCTS/FLUSHMOUNT/flush mount.htm

Hope I didn't just muddy the waters as we hijacked this thread

55spy'

This is still about lights but if we need to start another thread or go somewhere else that's fine. Thanks for all of those links. Maybe I can find something there that I can use.

According to Acerbis, they are DOT legal. See the following link or go to Acerbis USA. I'm not arguing with you but that is their claim.

I can't see how to use my DOT legal housing on my hand guard. So I may just have to join Tread in the ranks of the non-DOT approved.

My bad then I did not see the DOT stamp on em when we were installing then but I was pretty pi$$ed at the performance and quality so I'm not suprised.

Hey Tread, Love the lights and another vote for the red rings.
I'm thinking I may try using 2 driving lights with the bright being the 100w and dim 55w. Let us know how that 55w works out for ya.

Looks great Tread. I'd be carefully following those jackasses with those cheap flat chrome aftermarket bumpers, may blind yourself pretty good.

Chow's got a point there. Here in the land of mobile homes, 4X4s, yuk yuks and mouth breathers huge flat chrome bumpers are still all the rage. My stock lights are bright enough in that situation, I can't imagine having Tread's ion cannons blasting back from one of those puppies!

Sorry, rode to Daytona for the weekend, and it was a very nice ride.

55Spy,

I use the Acerbis handguards on my XR650 Supermoto and I mounted a custom dynamics flex array on each handguard. They have beeon on for over a year and still look bright when flashing and kinda stealth when they aren't. They looked something like this:

Mounting the bar end mirrors was too easy and required components from both kits. Only extra item required was longer flush mount bolts (2).

They are actually pretty bright and come with adhesive backed tape already installed. Will need a variable load flasher, or one of custom dynamics trick flashers, designed for the light load of LEDs.

Buellballs,

Thanks man. I ran the 55w at 5000k this week and hated it. It seems that the 5000k bulbs throw the light in a different location (bulb length or filament placement maybe?) and the color ~bluish just doesn't do it for me. So the hella 5000k in 55 and 100 watt are out of the running. I picked up a set of 3000k in 55w that looked exactly like the 100w that came with the lights to try out this week, so I will report on them later.

I think the twin driving setup, with the 100w hi 55w low may be a good combo to try, as the driving light does throw a respectable beam downrange with the right bulb. It won't qualify as a true "DeathRay" tho.

Let me know what I can do to help, and be sure to let us know how it turns out.

Here is a pic of the lights I put on mine,

One on the right is a 120w spot, on the left is a 100 flood.

The spot is switched to independedent, and wired to the accessory circuit, so I can use any time the key is on, or if my headlamp fuse pops.

The flood is switched to come on with the High beam.

I have only had 1 cutoff on the expressway each week for the last two weeks, since the install of the deathray setup. Even did about ten miles behind JohnnyLaw this morning, and all he did was adjust his mirror.

Beats the H E Doublehockeysticks out of 5 a day, thats fo dam sho.

I have thought about switching to HID, but cant justify the expense yet. I have checked the voltage, and I am still charging so I am not has motivated to go HID.
I hear you on the cutoffs, I really like the autobahn switch, I can flick the bright one and watch the light hit there smiling faces.
Interesting side note, I added a louder horn(kept the stock one, so I have two, one low, one high) if you hold the horn down long enough it will vibrate the relays enough to turn the big lights on.
Treadmark, Are your lights HID?

I was just reading back thru some older posts on this thread, and thought I would add some more info on my set-up (see pic above).

My lights are run thru relays. I have a 10ga power wire fused, and run straight from the battery. From past experience I HIGHLY recommend that all auxillary lights be run thru a relay.

The light on the passenger (right) side is a 120w spot light. I have this light aimed right down the fog line on the right side of the road. I did this specifically for bad weather, when you get that moment of blindness from oncoming traffic. It also sheds some extra light in the ditch, but its a very concentrated beam, it wont even reflect off an oncoming vehicles license plate. I wired this light into the accesory circuit via a relay, that way if I ever pop my headlight fuse I would still hace this light.

THe other light on the left side is a 100w in the driving pattern, this light sheds light across the whole road but doesnt have the "punch" like the spot. This light is also switched via a relay, but this one is tied into the highbeam, so when this switch is "on" the light will only come on with the higbeams, hence really liking the "autobahn" switch.

I have had people flash me when the spot is on, because I am sure it still seams very bright, only to light them up with the other two, they never flash back after that. : )

Interesting too, I can get a Stop sign to light up from just about a mile a way.

The lights are KC slimlights, about a $100 each I think. http://www.kchilites.com/store/Driving-C48.aspx

As for the brackets, I made them myself, pretty basic, I can post a pic tommorow.

Treadmark, Are your lights HID?

Hootis,

Right side is driving, 55w (to keep our board members happy) at 3000k aimed 2* down.

Left light is off road only spot, 100w at 5000k aimed at a deadly 90*.

I will do the 10ga power and ground mod with relays soon, and install a 90/130w H4 bulb in the high beam for a deadly 275w.

I will wire them to all come on with the flash to pass switch, as I don't want to punish cagers that didn't deserve it.
