Lost one of my Uly keys the other day. Phoned the dealer and they said the keys were 19.99 each but you have to buy 2 and they take 2 weeks to get from Harley in the States. So for the sum of $46 tax included you can get a key or should I say a set of set of keys. Why don't they have blanks at every dealer so I can get a replacement. This is not good. I went to 2 key shops before a fella there took a Volvo blank and filled it down to get it to work. Good thing was I got 2 keys from them for $13 taxes included. So if you lose a key pay Harley $46 or pay a key shop $13 for the Volvo key and pocket the extra$27 for yourself. Buell needs to have blank keys at all the dealers and it wouldn't cost them a fortune. Had I been on a trip and lost 2 keys I would have been an unhappy camper when they tell me it would be 2 weeks to get a replacement set. Get some blanks to the dealers right away. Low cost fix to improve service. | ||

Blanks won't do the dealer any good without a key cutting machine. Wonder how many keys you have to sell to pay for one of them? | ||

Honda/Acura automobile dealers have to step up to the plate for a new CNC based machine for cutting sidewinder keys. Cost to dealer: 5 grand! | ||

Daves, In a situation where there is NO key to copy from, then an expensive "Code" machine is needed. This machine makes a factory spec "Original" key with no "Duplication" errors. In this situation, the "Cylinder Code" or "Key Code" needs to be known. These codes can be obtained from the factory. They are also provided to the original purchaser of a new bike, car or truck. The Key Code Number is the number that is stamped into the Factory Original key's "Knockout". With the new Buells, the Knockout is actually a plastic tab that connects the two keys together from the factory. Too often, folks throw away the Knockout as trash. The return on investment for a "Code Machine" will be significantly longer than for an inexpensive "Key Duplication Machine". http://clksupplies.com/shop/index.php?cPath=95_201 Locksmiths and many car dealers will have Code Machines. If they are provided with an appropriate Blank and a Code, they can cut keys for Buell Dealers. It would seem logical for a Buell Dealer to stock Blanks and to have an inexpensive Duplication Machine. Such a Dealer should/could also strike up a relationship with owners of Code Machines. Man, I thought I threw away my plastic knockout... just found it though. Good thing I'm a hoarder. How come the dealer didn't mention that to me I wonder? Dealers don't need to ante up for a cutter, I ordered a couple of blanks for my R100S and had a key shop make them. IIRC though the problem was finding someone to cut a steel blank. | ||

Don't have any idea if this helps anyone, but I noticed today that my Buell key is the same blank as the key from my MZ Baghira. I *thought* the lock cylinders looked the same, turns out they are at least made by the same company (Zadi), if not identical units. |
