"With over 4,000 miles to cover in such a short time, Tom and Rob aim to be travelling for up to 12 hours per day – a gruelling test of both man and machine."

10 days,400 miles per day, 12 hrs to do it. They must maintain an avg. speed of 33.33 mph.

That's gruelling? Sounds like bar hopping to me.

Thanks for the laugh.

Traveling thru european capitol cities in ten days is quite likely to be grueling. Imagine washinton to boston 5 times during rush hour. I don't envy them that trip at all.

400/day for 10 days may not be the ultimate test of endurance, but it's certainly not a piece of cake either, especially if you're talking about European backroads, congested streets, and passing through town after town after town.

I just checked my RAT log. On day one, I rode from Port Arthur to Port Bolivar to Galveston to Victoria to South Padre Island in about 10 hrs. That's 488 miles, of getting receipts, at least 1/2 hr ferry ride, road construction around Port Bolivar and SP Island, and heavy traffic. Then still had another 10 hrs of riding time after that.

Still sounds like bar hopping to me. Maybe I'll have to go to the UK and experience it first hand.

Hooray for you. You still can't compare putting down miles in wide-open Texas with the European roads these guys are taking. The road systems are just totally different, and your version of "heavy traffic" would probably make a European laugh out loud. You weren't crossing international borders, either.

Again, it may not be an epic endurance challenge, but you are seriously underestimating the challenge these guys are facing (for charity, I might add).

I agree with bob. I have ridden the ultimate coast to coast and back 11,600 miles in three weeks including 2 days at home doing repairs and 2 days broke down on the haul road. I rode the 500+ miles from Fairbanks to Prudhoe Bay in the rain. I agree that their trip would be great to do but it isn't a test of man and machine. There are people traveling on mopeds that are capable of doing that trip. However, they are doing it for a good cause and seem like they will enjoy the ride so it is still good. Newspaper types over exaggerate every thing.

rotflmao

all I can say is if you've never driven, or ridden in europe, dont even bother to comment on it. Its like a guy from florida talking to someone from canada about winter riding - no point of reference.

closest I can come is to ask if you can do 400 miles in 12 hours through MANHATTAN RUSH HOUR traffic for 10 days straight.

My hang up is the word "grueling". The RAT ride, with 20 hours of riding per day was "fun", not grueling.
I've never been to Europe, so I can buy the no point of reference comment. I guess all the stories about high speed European cars on the Autobahn, fast Italian cars/bikes has confused me. Probably the part about only riding 12 hrs a day is not helping either. That leaves 8 hours for sleeping and 4 hours for eating.

Hope every one comes to the Buell homecoming days. Be sure to travel though my local area, Chicago. You guys should have no trouble at all.

Electraglider_1997: Sorry for turning your thread into something it was not intended to be. Hope the charity does well.

the autobahn, and autostrada are great...but have you ever looked at distances in europe compared to N.America or Australia? also, while its legal to blast along at 130 mph, so is everyone else, in close order: thats why accidents on the autobahn are spectacular. 10 minutes later you're in a new country, and the roads have changed to broken asphalt, 50mph limit, and dodging trabants & microcars!

the other issue is that for large areas, there ISNT space between towns. one 'burg transmogrifies right into the next, with no 'open roads' between. Paris traffic is of course notorious for its hold ups & traffic jams ( ditto London, or Bonn, or Rome, or...)but have you ever looked to see just how much area 'the greater paris area' covers? how far do you have to go before you can FIND an open road?

I grew up all over Europe, and frankly I'll take a good old N.American mountain ride over european traffic any day, even with the posted limits
