Hebert BMW has a GSA on display and doing test rides ! I didn't have time to try it, but did sit on the beast and have a few observations:

Anybody who thinks the Uly is tall needs to see this beast; The standard Uly seat is LOWER than the BMW in low position! yikes!!

1. Needs a WIDE LOAD sign on the tanks! They basically are equal to a little more than the width of your knees when on the seat, so should do well to keep your knees out of the wind blast. The tank is only slightly narrower than the engine cylinder heads which is the reason for the crash bars- your gonna need them if/when a drop happens.

2. This beast is TALL: Short riders need not apply. I could just barely get the balls of my feet on the ground, and not firmly. Corbin need to get a grip on this quickly!

3. Windscreen is interesting with lower outboard pieces which one of the shop's riders says really makes a difference in comfort compared to the GS screen.

4. This particular bike comes with the ABS/servo brakes and has the mounting rails for the bags already on the frame. Dealer says they will order the bags when somebody buys it.

5. Color is the greenish tint that is ok, but I do not care for green. Need some other color than "seasick green".

6. Overall impression on the first look: It kind of reminds me of a Hummer; a big brut, but not something that grabs my fancy instantly. Another comparison would be this: The 1200GS is like a purebread triple crown race horse; svelte!. The 1200GSA is a mule; big, hefty, somewhat ugly and all business. The Ulysses by comparison is a slim beauty!

7. Getting the bike off the sidestand on balance will be a bear with the gas full if you are shorter than the average NBA ball player given the height; it is difficult with almost no gas in it. I would hate to have to pick it up after a drop if you happen to lose footing and a full tank of gas! Yikes.

Short version before a ride: Probably not my cup of tea! Way too big, like a Harley Electra-Glide.

On the plus side, It is not as ugly as the 1150GSA

Bottom line is that the Uly is probably my choice! Color still TBD. Actually, Tiger stripes in Orange and Black would solve the problem nicely as a compromise !!

I was interested in the 1200 Adventure and was planning to do a demo ride in a few weeks at the dealer's open house. Sorry to hear that it is even taller than the Ulysses, even at the low seat position.

As big as they may be, they'll tread right through the rough stuff, including sand. One guy on our trip had one with luggage, and it weighed in at about 1000lbs. But he made it through the sand, while I was eating it.

To me, SAND is a four letter code word for Turn the f**k around!

Eor:

Yes, I wonder why anybody wants to go into deep sand, mud or such with a 1000lb bike. Give me a 250cc dirt bike any day. Much easier to stand up after the inevitable drop.

How goes the new tires?

Dealer says this one is $17,665. Add tax, title and license plus the bags, you're are out the door slightly over 20,000 bucks. Yikes !!

Truly a bargin for somebody!!!

Hi guys,

2 weeks after I brought my Uly home one of my riding buddies showed up with a new 1200GS.

OTD price "as equipped"? Over 20k....

I figure the money I saved paid for my DRZ400S. 2 bikes is still better than one AFAIK.

Best,

Jim in Santa Barbara
