Greeting from cheese and chocolate land aka - Switzerland.

This years bike trip will be to south Texas where I plan a ten day ride from Houston taking a loop down to Galveston, along the Gulf coast up the Rio Grande into Big Bend down to Fredericksburg and San Antonio before heading back for more cheese and chocolate.

What I want to ask are tips for great places to stay and eat along the road and also any side rides that might be recommended.

Last year I rode with some fellow Brits, taking a route north out of Denver to Casper and Cody and back south. See a road trip blog here - http://gaz-oldfartsmc-2007.blogspot.com/

Thanks.

Dick
Some friends and I are planning a trip down there this coming weekend. One of them had found this site that lists a bunch of good rides.

Thanks Darrell.

Its been suggested I post that on the quick board for a better response which I will do.

That site is a good find, thanks for passing it on.

Good luck with the trip, if you find something of interest when you are down there please let me know.

Dick, if your going to F'burg and San Antonio, make sure to ride the "three sisters" from Vanderpool to Leaky. The roads in the hill country are just incredible. We meet in Austin at Opal Divines, on South Congress street each Thursday at 7 PM. Swing on by Austin if you get a chance.
Our local forum is:
http://hellbuellies.freeforums.org/
We have ride reports with roads you can check out.

Dick: Buell78578 speaks the truth. Check out D'Rose in Leakey--it's a great place to stay. Also, Riverfront Motel in Bandera.

Dick,
In the Big Bend area be sure and ride Highway 170 from Terlingua, Tx. to Presidio, Tx.
Must stop place is called "La Kiva" in the ghost town of Terlingua. It serves cold beer and food.

Hi Kevin Thanks for the tip. Day 6, Tuesday 11th November already has me riding in Big Bend Fort Davis to Alpine which takes me through Presideo and Terlingua. I did'nt know about 'La Kiva' though. You sound like you know the road well so I guess you have ridden it. Big Bend and the Hill country are one of the reasons I am going to Texas and I am really looking forward to it. I will PM you my full route nearer the time in case you can join me for a beer someplace on the way. Thanks again for the info. Its much appreciated. Dick.

Dick,
Yes, I've ridden the area extensively. In fact I'm riding out to Marathon, Texas in August.
I also recommend The Gage Hotel, Nice Bar

In Fort Davis try Highway 118
Must Stops
McDonald Observatory

Ft. Davis

Remember to bring ear plugs the silence is deafening. : )

i would not suggest galveston right now....but if you want some good spicy food and dont mind re-routing your trip a little
swing through lake charles, LA if you decide to drop me a line on here or a call.
the hurricane re-arranged galveston pretty good..
