Here are some pics of of new hwy 90 in biloxi. And of the devestation down here. This doesnt even scratch the surface of it. One good thing is there is some reconstruction going on to bring this place back. However it will be 5-10 yrs before it will be near like it was before hurricane katrina. The pic of the ship is actuall a casino that came in mored and started to float away. The are 5 other casinos that were swept from the gulf of mexico onto land across hwy 90 on the north side several are almost a 1/4 mile away from where they were mored. Still impossible for me to comprehend the overall devastation. Thanks for posting the pics. I think I need to take a tour along the coast this year to see it first hand. | ||

Wow... Unbelievable. I spent time there at Keesler AFB in '87,'97,'00 and '01. Hard to really fathom the pictures I see are reality. DAve | ||

Thanks for the pics- they really are worth a thousand words. I notice that some of the wreckage of the casino barges has been hauled off- are they planning on repairing and refloating them? | ||

Its sad the Jefferson Davis home was about 85% destroyed. As you look down Hwy 90 there is a gulf side and a land side. There was an estimated 25-35 foot storm surge that hit. As far as casinos. Where you see no debri it because the whole builing is gone from the storm surge. Alot has been removed but there are hundreds of just concret slabe where whole communitys and business were. I heard the Gov of MS in a radio adress after the storm say it would be rediculous to require casinos to be built on the water. I have a feeling they willl be on land this time for the ones being totaly rebuilt. Blake and anyone for that matter if you do ever come down let me know. Sgthigg, Cool pics. I work for the Navy and volunteered to go down right after Katrina to help with damage assessment on the buildings on the base at Gulfport. I stayed 3 weeks down there; spent a lot of time over at Pascagoula and driving back and forth. The damage along highway 90 along the water was truly incredible. You just can't fathom the damage if you haven't seen it first-hand. Pascagoula got hit pretty hard too. Here's a photo we took of what was left of Trent Lott's home:  This house supposedly dated from the 1850's. Virtually every house along the water in Pascagoula was gone except for the foundations. | ||

Sgthigg, I'm trackin man. Closest I got to Mississippi was Slidell, there was a huge amount of wind damage there. I had a month deployment in LA from Sept 2nd to Oct. 7th with my PA National Guard Unit. The destruction and devastation was unbelievalbe. We most of our time in Jefferson outside of New Orleans, I only made it to the Gulf coast once. The farther we progressed to the coast, the more things were swept clean from the storm surge. I live in Pass Christian, MS. 20 miles from Biloxi and work in Gulfport at the SeaBee base. I travel to Louisiana alot and see how much more things are worse in LA, as for rebuilding. MS definately got hit alot worse, especially Hancock County( Bay Saint Louis and Waveland). The people of Mississippi deserve the credit of having the most resolve and backbone than anyone in Louisiana. They are getting on with thier lives and rebuilding, the Louisianans seem to still be waiting for handouts and free stuff. I am not a native of the region and have no biased opinions, it is just a fact. |
