Buellkowski,
I had a conversation with Newfie's father in law over the summer about that, maybe Newfie can speak more on that. From what pop in law had told me, there were some very interesting things that went on. I believe that the vote was originally to go with the US, but was overturned. There was also a huge debate with WWII vets who had no citizenship with Canada when they returned from the war... I'll do some research,

"Canada sure is picky about wars...y'awl were happy mucking it up in Desert Storm, Somalia and Afghanistan but not in Iraq...?"

Kevyn,

The people of Canada could identify no just cause to support the invasion Iraq. Iraq was no longer an aggressor state and harboured no active terrorist groups, as was the case in Afghanistan.

"Y'awl don't want to set foot in Iraq because of your peace activists and resident Muslim contingents does that also mean y'awl aren't supporting the U.S. and coalition efforts in other ways?"

Kevyn,

Again, Canada's non-involvement decision re. Iraq resulted from a lack of evidence or just cause for military aggression.

On a more positive note, your President was quite charming last night while praising Canada for it's current humanitarian efforts in Iraq.

At one point he even jokingly thanked the crowds for mostly waiving to him "with all five fingers." Nothing breaks the Canadian ice like a little self-depricating humour. ; )

President Bush also mentioned intentions to set wheels in motion to remove bans on Canadian produced beef, while enjoying Alberta steak for dinner in Quebec.

All in all I think his visit was refreshingly positive and served to help restore the tenor of recently strained international relations.

Good on him.

Blake, 56 million AMERICANS voted against your self appointed demigod.
You have a tendency to throw people off this site if they defend their opposing opinions as vigorously as you defend your opinions.
BTW, don't bother watching the Michael Moore film; it might cause you to to have to reject facts that get in the way of your opinions.

#1 - Drop the Political Opinions - whether they are pro-Bush or anti-Bush. Its an OPINION if you don't like it then don't take any bother to it.

#2 - Bush's visit was good for Canada/US relations

#3 - Would have been nice for Bush to visit this island?!? Instead of Alberta Beef I could have had my mother-in-law serve him salt fish & potatoes.

#4 - Alex is right - I have an Encyclopedia of Newfoundland & Labrador for you Mr. Prior for your research. Pretty interesting what the vote was back then as to join Canada, go on as our own Country, join the US (was actually an option). If you want a good comparison to the vote at that time go back to Bush's original vote in Florida and the discrepancies that were there.

#5 - Blake please chill out!!!! Come up here for a vacation and I swear you will be very well rested.....I'll even let you borrow the S1.

personally, i just sidestep things political.
i think that every fellow american onsite feels strongly FOR his/her country, and all have the same common goal, that being betterment of our land.
the party/candidate details vary, but the common goal is
patriotic, so i enjoy the fact that folks onsite are so impassioned.
my big brother and me are opposites on candidates, but we are otherwise strikingly similar, politically and culturally, if that makes any sense.
we don't allow our differences to affect our fraternity, and, like i said, we are pretty similar in the end result we'd each like, good things for america.
gore vidal once said that the two parties and their candidates are more alike with each election, and i believe there is some substance to that.
that being said, i think it's very important to rememeber that dissent can be patriotic, much as our 17th & 18th century colonists dissented against the throne, and conversely, wartime is a lousy time to rip on the commander-in-chief, regardless of whom, exactly, holds that office.
i think we are all more similar than internet discourse allows us to realize.

Same thing Roger but with Hard Tack!!!!

All Damm Good though!!!!!

Back to ALL THINGS CANADIAN!!!

Apparently if you were a foreign stripper you could very easily get a work Visa in CANADA!!!!

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO - to all the American Ladies of Badweb - WE HAVE JOBS FOR YOU UP HERE IN CANADA!!!!! Until now - looks like the rules are changing.

CTV.ca News Staff

Human Resources Minister Joe Volpe is changing the rules, to make it harder for foreign strippers to receive Canadian work permits.

The announcement comes after allegations of a stripper scandal involving Immigration Minister Judy Sgro.

The circumstances under which a Romanian stripper received temporary resident permit after she worked on Sgro's re-election campaign are being reviewed by ethics commissioner Bernard Shapiro.

Meanwhile, Volpe's decision means Human Resources will not continue to spend tax dollars analyzing whether there are enough Canadians to work as strippers.

Volpe said tax strip club owners will now be required to justify employee hires on a case-by-case basis.

"The rationale is that this minister didn't think that the government of Canada should do an analysis of those types of jobs even though they're legitimate jobs,'' Volpe said, referring to himself in the third person outside the Commons on Wednesday.

Almost 700 strippers received work permits last year, the majority from Romania.

Industry critics have said Canadian exotic dancers are less willing to perform lap dances.

"I'm glad that this has happened," NDP Leader Jack Layton said of Volpe's announcement.

"Now the government, at least in future, might not be any longer pimping for the sex industry. And that's a good thing. It never should have been doing it in the first place."

Thank you Tramp. Very well said.

Some thoughts I'd like to share with everyone:

I've deleted posts from right wingers and admonished them in the same manner as I have left wingers. Funny thing is though that when I do, NONE of the left wingers cry foul or attack me or object, only when it is they or another left winger who is the object of admonition do they whine, moan, complain and object. Who's the real hypocrite?

My fuse is admittedly very short these days. If you want to get along here please don't derisively attack the administration of this site, Buell, Buell motorcycles, America, or President Bush and his administration. Constructive criticism and thoughtful debate are welcome and encouraged. If you cannot abide the above, you best depart.

I administer the web site. It takes some effort and time. If you cannot respect my wishes and those of most others here as to what content is acceptable to post, then I sure as heck will not be inclined to respect you. Smart mouthed derisive posts sure don't make this a better place for anyone.

I defy anyone to name anyone who I have thrown off the site for merely disagreeing with my views. Name ONE!

The truth is that we've denied posting privileges on very rare occasions. We do so for threatening violence, for overtly posting obscenities and/or vulgarities, for waging unprovoked hateful personal attacks, and for failing repeatedly to abide by the very simple policies of the board.

Currently there are a whopping five people who have been denied the privilege of posting on the site, of those only one had expressed political views in opposition to mine. That is not why he lost his posting privileges, and anyone who reads our exchange above will hopefully recognize that. If not, well it's probably best that such an individual not participate here.

No one has ever been admonished or banned for expressing thoughtfully in a non-inflamatory way an opposing opinion here.

Good grief, a number of the custodians of this site hold political views in opposite to my own. Indeed that is one reason why some of them were asked to help out here, to give balance to the place. Trust me, they are responsible for keeping me in line as much as anyone, including everyone else here. If I violate the policy here, call me on it!

How about this... as I've said many times before... if you don't like the way the site is maintained or its policies, then leave; remove yourself from the source of your aggravation. Or if you are capable, make thoughtful constructive suggestions to better our little community here. What a concept, eh? (in keeping with the Canadian theme of the thread) : )

I confess that I've allowed myself to be drawn into too many derisive political flame-fests, I'm sure that I instigated some unjustly too; the truth is that they hurt the overall decorum of the site. Our brave and honorable custodians showed me the light on that. They are great folks. So we decided unanimously to put an end to any further divisive political confrontations. Thus we closed the "Political Thoughts" thread.

God bless John Kerry and President Bush, they made for some very heated and impassioned debate, unfortunately a bit too impassioned. So that is over and done. We even had a board wide poll and the result was to shut the political thread down. Democracy succeeds on that issue at BadWeB. : )

I don't want to stifle all non-moto discussion or even politically related content. Some do. They may prove wiser than I, but for now I would like to say that sharing news, thoughtful observations, criticisms, that is all fine.

Just know that anything resembling partisan political derision, or as always personal insult/attack is grounds for losing posting privileges. Avoid making blatantly insulting statements of opinion that tend to be divisive. If you wouldn't appreciate the same type of remark directed at you and/or your beliefs, then don't post it. Try to stick to honest facts and thoughtful non-inflamatory content.

The alternative will be public admonishment and eventual loss of posting privileges.

Are we all together? Can I get a "Go BadWeB!"?

If not, where am I wrong?

Newf,
A bit chilly up yonder methinks. Please ship S1 to Texas! : )

Avoid making blatantly insulting statements of opinion that tend to be divisive. If you wouldn't appreciate the same type of remark directed at you and/or your beliefs, then don't post it.

Public apologies are funny things, eh?

Reminds me of a boss I once had who was hauled onto the carpet for loosing his cool with one of the customer's engineers and calling him an a*****e. When asked to apologize to the engineer at a meeting attended by representatives of both firms, he offered: "Listen buddy, I'm really sorry you're such an a*****e."

He lost the job... and earned my undying respect.

Funny- I voted for him, and a lot of people I know did as well. I guess that doesn't matter to you, but that definitely doesn't make him self-appointed. He definitely isn't a demi-god. I haven't seen him fly, or shoot lightning from his arse or anything...

"Blake, 56 million AMERICANS voted against your self appointed demigod. "

Lets break this down!

60 Million for, 56 M against. That means he won the popular vote election. That is how it works in US, (that plus the electoral college win).

So, Bush won the majority in pop count and electoral college. That means he is not self appt. but rather legally and duly elected. That seems fair and uncontested, no?

Demi-god. Define please and tell us how this connects to Bush via his actions in FACTUAL terms, not rhetoric. Seems to me that is the attack on Bush, always on emotion, not on facts.

So, please respond with intellect or not at all.

Thanks for sharing!
