Oktoberfast Cometh!

me ‘n D invite you to enjoy a casual, intimate riding weekend with great people and superb roads! (or, superb people and great roads, take your pick!)

the general game plan is pretty much like this:

Friday Oktober 8th: arrive, at your convenience, at the fabulous ThunderDome, overlooking beautiful Isabella Lake. ping (edress in profile) if you need directions. we’ll be up for guests anytime from about noon on. the microbrews start as soon as you shut your bike off for the day, and the BBQ ignites at 5 p.m. or so and flames into the clear night sky until everyone is full. tunes, brews, Buells. lather, rinse, repeat.

Saturday Oktober 9th: 8 a.m. launch from the Dome, with an immediate alpine assault up The Bostrom (Highway 155). breakfast at the Iron Horse in Glennville, then back into the twisties, basically north, on Jacks Ranch and Old Stage Road. fuel and snacks in Springville. onward, on the mother of all goat trails, Yokohl Valley Road. north on 198 to Lemon Cove. north on Dry Creek Road (ALWAYS a favorite). north at Badger on 245 (a great road for getting rid of your chicken strips) to the intersection of 180, where a right promptly puts us in Kings Canyon National Park for the night. our digs will be the sublime Montecito Sequoia Lodge, right in the heart of Sequioa/Kings Canyon Nat’l Parks. dinner, drinks, and decadence will surely ensue.

Sunday Oktober 10th: breakfast at the Lodge, a casual sport-tour through the parks, then back to the Dome via the Mighty 190 and the Western Divide Hwy, with a stop at the Pondersosa for refreshments on the way. Sunday evening it’s dinner in Kernville, then back to the Dome to sample some more microbrews, and tell bold, blatant lies about our respective riding abilities.

Monday Oktober 11th: y’all have to go home now, but if you ask nice (our arms are easily twisted) me ‘n D will gladly escort you outta Ferrisville on one of several different local flick-fests, including the fabuellously infamous Lion’s Trail.

okay, s’more stuff to ponder:

-- ping me via e-mail (in profile) if you’re coming, so’s we know how much food and brew and such to stockpile.

-- when you call Montecito Lodge (800/227-9900, 650/967-8612, 9-5 Mon-Fri) to make your reservation for Saturday night (me 'n D are in room 134), ask for Christine and tell her Ferris Bueller sent you (serious) – she’ll take over from there. we’ll all be staying in their Sugar Pine Lodge, and she’s giving us $10 off the rooms (from $99 to $89) because, well, she likes motorcycles. call NOW, as she is only blocking out rooms for us until August 15th – after that it’s catch as catch can. most of the rooms will accommodate up to 8 people, so maybe y’all can network amongst yourselves here on BADWEB or via e-mail and pack in some extra bods, reducing the room hit a bit.

-- Montecito Lodge is a very cool place (be sure to check out their website) and dinner, breakfast, and 24-hour hot and cold drinks and snacks are included in the deal. (and the caretaker is a Bueller )

-- it’s a holiday weekend, but if you HAVE to return to your particular version of reality on Sunday, well, we understand, and we’ll be departing the parks early enough on Sunday to get you home before sundown.

-- neither snow nor rain nor sleet nor hail should be an issue, but c-c-cold mountain temps in the mornings are a REAL possibility - ya never know up here when the season is gonna turn, so it’s best to be prepared.

-- EVERYONE is welcome to attend Oktoberfast - makes no matter what brand of bike you ride, what brand of person you are, or what your riding ability is – ALL are welcome. there is NO pressure to ride fast, and sight-seeing along the way is encouraged.

-- lastly, since mine and Denise’s names are on this deal, and since we love you all, just like last year we will insist that there be no alcoholic beverages consumed while anyone is riding. the time for knocking back a cold one (or ten) is at the end of the day, with the bike keys tucked safely away. last year everyone was cool with this requirement, which was brought about to show respect to a couple of fallen Buellers, and I hope this year is the same. we thank you for understanding.

there’s no way we can cover everything in one post, so if you’ve got questions ask away. we can comfortably house about 15 or so folks here at the Dome, via beds, couches, floor space, and sleeping bags out on the deck (my personal favorite), and if we get crushed with participants this year the Barewood Motel is only 60 seconds away.

ride two lean,
Ferris & Denise

Those of you who are going definitely need to pack warm riding gear just in case. The "Bostrom" & "Lions Tail" were quite cold today due to a early cold snap. Hard to say if we will be hot, cold, or in between in three weeks.

The whole Lighton clan is going. We're trailering the bike up to Ferrisburg on Friday, sleeping in the trailer on Friday night. We were going to bring Joanne's SV650, and Zach (9 year old son) was going to be on the back of my S3. But after looking at how cool Montecito Lodge is, Joanne and Zach decided they would rather hightail it from the Deniseville Buellerdome straight to there in the truck. They'll beat us there, hang and do outdoorsy stuff while we take the twisties. Then when we ride back on Sunday, they'll hang at the lodge enjoying their hospitality and scenery longer and meet us back at the dome.

So, what this means is that if there is anything that needs to go from Haughtontown to the lodge, she can carry it. This way, bikes can stay lean and mean and not carry lots of gear, making the twisties even funner. The other cool thing that this means is that I get to take my S1W (or the shop Xb9S if the S1W isn't running by then) instead of my S3.

Mind you, she will not be running chase, she'll be taking the fastest straightest route. So she'll only be carrying stuff you'll need at the other end.

Al

Al, Dino is correct as we will be taking the fastest straightest route. Straighter roads can be found down in the SJ valley but it is a long, twisty side step and a lot of stops and small towns going up the valley. Not as good a view by far either. Personally I would ride or chase.

Sandblast - You'll be going past more than one grove over the course of Oktoberfast. The largest of the large are down the General's Highway from the lodge. The highway is named for the trees which, in turn, are named after...generals. General Grant and General Sherman. Closer to the Thunderdome is the Walk of 100 Giants.

Hey guys, my Dad went into the hospital today with renal (Kidney) failure. He may not have long so were probably going to cancel this trip. We'll let you know. I do wish we could go, but the family needs us here. I'll have a final decision by the end of the week.
