I don't have any experience with the flip ups, but when I was shopping awhile ago http://www.helmetshop.com/ had the best prices I could find and prompt shipping.

The flip ups will be DOT approved, but not SNELL. (if that sort of thing is important to you)

Any of the bigger brands of helmets (Aria, Shoei, AGV, etc) should have shield available long after your purchase. The more helmets they sell, the more likely you are to find replacement parts.

That said, Icon's replacement shields run between $25 -$35 bucks each, which is about half of what other manufacturers get for their shields. FWIW: I do not know first hand about the quality of Icons helmets though)

Oneway, do you have a Cycle Gear near you?

they will match anyone's walk-in prices (not mail order). it's a store policy. when i need something that Cycle Gear carries i call around to the mail order outlets, get their best walk-in price on the item, and note the price, the name of person i spoke with, and the date, and then i visit Cycle Gear.

this way i can actually see, touch, and TRY ON the item (in the case of apparel) before the purchase, and still get a killer deal.

i just bought a new Shoei from Cycle Gear in Bakersfield. they matched Chaparral's walk-in price (which was only marginally higher than their mail-order price), plus they had a promotion where a second shield was included for free, plus i got the satisfaction of keeping my $ in the local economy.

sorry, i've got no personal experience with flip-ups, altho i know that Cycle Gear does carry some.

I have a schueberth. It is awesome. hidden sun visor that is operable while riding, city vent, seat belt buckle type, great vents. So quiet and comfortable. it has a rubber piece that goes around your neck that keeps wind and noise out. pretty pricey. I found mine on ebay for around $250 slighlty used. My buddy bought one in europe for $150 and I think I have seen retail us for $400. well worth it for the helmet.

The Nolan Trend is "not that bad" for a $150 flip up. It'll work fine, but I promise you will never mistake it for a Shoei.

I had flipups (first Nolan, now Schuberth) because I had glasses. I got lasik, ditched the glasses, and think my next helmet will probably be a non flip front.

You can call or email AGV with the model of helmet you have. They will let you know first-hand if they have shields for your lid available. They responded to my email request within 24 hours. (I have the AGV "Pole Position" Helmet with the Buell Racing logo on it, sold at Harley dealers who don't carry much for replacement shields.)

The Nolan is a nice helmet for the price.

If you prefer snell & DOT rated then you wont find any flipups. But you can pick up a real nice HJC fullface thats Snell rated for under $150.

Snell is a very important standard because it offers something that no other standard conforms to.

Snell Foundation randomly check at retail outlets Snell approved helmets. If a helmet is Snell approved the quality is consistent for this reason.

Rocket; I'm with you on the testing - including surprise inspections. It can only be a good thing for us - the end user.

It would be good though, if Snell came up with a test for flip-front and open face helmets as well. AFAIR the hick-up is that Snell includes a chin bar impact test - the open face helmets wouldn't fare so well ; )

thanks all, i also think the snell rating is a must.most sanctioning bodies require it so there must be something to it.this thread will help me with some sources

The snell rating is great, but a flip up can't have a snell rating. The flip doesn't provide a rigid enough chin bar. Part of the snell cert is that the chin protection doesn't move- if it flips up, well that's certainly too much motion to earn a snell rating.

As far as they go, I have a pair of HJC Symax helmets, and they are around 165 new, at places like the helmetshop. Not as good a helmet as the Schuberts or the Shoei Syncrotecs, but one advantage is they use the standard hjc ac10 shields, which have been around forever.

also, if you notice, most track days don't allow flip ups because they lack the snell rating.
However, i wouldn't trade my flip up for anything...makes all the diff in the world on hot days at a stop light.

Nolan 100, can't believe how much easier it is putting on helmet with my eyeglasses. I wonder how long the mechanism will work. I already bought my first replacement shield that I just hold onto until I'm ready. I found out the hard way about NEVER being able to find replacement shield. I ran over a year with dirt bike goggles and a baklava on cold mornings because I couldn't find a replacement Shoei shield.
PS. I went with Helmet Harbor on the web, no complaints.
