The dealer,

I want to confirm that if I remove the jugs from the mill that I Do or Do not "have" to hone and re ring

1 damn bolt is going to cost some money

the dealer does not even do the work they send it out!, Not Good.

I may be pulling the wrist pins and leaving the slugs in the jugs

In that I have not seen the jugs yet I do not know if I am honing them.

Aren't there a few engine builders on here you could ask?

>>>Aren't there a few engine builders on here you could ask?

I'd check with either Pammy, NRHS or Jim Higgins.

Who builds more engines?

If you broke off an exhaust pipe stud, get a JIMS repair tool and drill it out yourself, no need to remove jug.

Pammy would know.

She can also do any of the honing, etc that you may need. I used her shop when screwed up a stud hole in my Blast head. I was very pleased with the work and the price.

I actualy spoke to Wes at CycleRama, the general idea is that it is not essential, , they dont do it on their "race" engines, he said that its a "old wives tail" I am inclined to believe it.

Whats happened is that the head mount broke a bolt, I removed the bolt from the head but the job is less than stellar.

Wes is going to check for cracks, weld up, tap the left hole, and mill the "pads" to flat,

I am debating having the heads "freshened up" new guides seals springs etc.. is a few dollars more, the repair price for the head is quite reasonable! for the work to be done,

I wanted to know WHY the FSM recomends it, its money that will be spent to hone and replace rings if I go that way

I wanted to get to 100K then open the motor
not going to happen

This kind of thing should not have happened in the first place.

On the bright side the heads will pass through some tallented hands and will be better than new when they return.

When I am done with this MAJOR EXPENSE I expect the motor and related to be reliable
for the life of the bike, provided I do the repair and maintenence correctly
hence my question.

In that I am not spending money with the other speed shops, and one mentioned is not a board sponsor. I felt that it would be improper to waste the time of the sponsor shops that I was not spending money with asking questions.

No mine are stock and are Iron lined so they can be honed ( must be for over bore)

Nicosil can be repaired to a degree IIRC.

I am old school and like Iron liners, replaceable bushings in my cam gear chest,
and cassette transmissions.

}hummm, couldnt tell ya but i bet buell will say forsure replace the rings.

Err no they said call the local dealer, "they are the technical support in these matters". The nice lady was appologetic and the call was 9 out of 10 for good service, I ask geek questions.

Ask Pammy, Pammy is out of the office this week, I got Wes (just as good)

I guess I skip the hone ..
I look forward to seeing the motor go to 100K for bottom end service

Thanks all.

Jim, if it were mine I'd hone and re-ring while it's apart for peace of mind.

I'd do the heads also because they will have the front disassembled for welding and re-machining.
