Does anyone make a 5-speed gearbox for a 75 sporty? Better yet, did they ever make a 5 speed sporty that may have a swappable tranny to this one?

i dont even think you can fit the 5 speed into an evo 4 speed case. the iron head 5 speed project sounds very difficult

The older 4 speed shovelheads are upgradeable. If you can shove another cog in that sporty I'm not aware of the how's or who's. You might call Baker's or Revtech and ask one of the xmsn doctors.

from what I understand, the 5th gear takes up the space that used to house the kick start assembly. so yes, you should be able to slide a 5 speed into the 'ol shovelhead sporty. The bottom ends are basically the same. (WHAT? Harley uses the same design for decades?) yeppers, I'm pretty sure it will slide in no problem.

the kickstart assembly is behind the clutch hub in the primary. i remember seeing a add for a andrews 5 speed back in the early 70's. i think it was called a roadrunner trans. always thought it would be cool in my 72. and ironheads are not shovelheads, they are ironheads.

Philip, As the proud owner of an old IronHead Sporty I thought that was what I was trying to say in my message? There's kit's a plenty for the shovels, but on the sportys ( did call it a sporty and not IH) I don't believe there is one.

bigdaddy, that's cool. right after i posted that message i thought to myself, why am i splitting hairs over, this especially when i get frustrated seeing it happen on other topics. a company named trock made a set of cylinders to bolt shovelheads on and with mods would bolt to a sportster case. called it a shovster. i still have a mini poster on the wall of that setup. always thought it would go good with the 4 5/8" stroker wheels in mine. good to talk with a fellow ironhead owner.

The Shovster -- must be a distant relative of the Knuckle/Pan ;) -- and I must admit I've not heard of it. If you can take a pic of that poster will you post it? I love the old stuff and I'm always picking up the old scooter rags from flea markets at every opportunity.

It's all good. Later.

I've looked into getting a 5 speed for an 86 1100 evo Sporty. There are none made as a "quick" swap by anyone, so it would have to be a custom job which equals to $$$. I'm not sure what you are trying to achieve, but perhaps switching gear ratio's and sprocket sizes you can get the same outcome of a 5th final gear speed effect.

Thanks for the input. The shovster idea was certainly entertained, but that doesn't help with the gearbox :). I'll do some more looking around in the new directions I have. Thanks again.

As far as gear ratios... That's already done, but the whole point is speed AND acceleration.

"the whole point is speed AND acceleration."
Build a more powerful motor maybe easier, less costly and perhaps less time

I would start with another platform.

"i would start with another platform" i second that ! i built mine with the already mentioned 4 5/8 stroker wheels and andrews v9 cams, 44 mikuni and port work and ended up with a decent running ironhead sportster for it's time, but now, if i had to do it again i would'nt. leave it close to stock and have fun in the slow lane and get a evo based sportster to build a hotrod. also when you start making horsepower with a ironhead they have a bad habit of spitting the transmission gears out of the cases! just my thoughts. proud owner of a 72 sportster for 31 years.

Hey Philip, A high-res pic would be great! I will turn it in to my own poster for my barn. Thanks!
