In this time of economic uncertainty and rising gas prices (I know they just dropped but they'll bounce back don't ya know) what did I decide to do this weekend?
I bought a brand new truck!
Spurred by the deteriorating condition of my car and the annoyance of having to ask favors to move anything bigger than a breadbox, I had been thinking of getting a truck for some time. Well after having the family drive 500miles to pick me up from Buelltoberfest II, I decided to actually start looking. I didn't want them to drive up but they did anyway, my mom is a worrier.
I really wanted a Toyota Tacoma. I've heard nothing but great things but the only one I found that was in my price range just didn't impress me. It was too high up and I couldn't get comfortable with the long clutch and shifter travel. Also I was very keen on the new Chevy Colorado. My previous truck was a Silvarado and I loved that truck. But the interior was just crap. The seat only had two positions; folded and straight up. I looked at the Rangers too, nice interiors but I didn't want a ranger.
Finally on the way back home I decided to stop at the Mitsubishi dealership. I had been told about the loyalty incentives the last time I had my Eclipse in for service and I figured they'd give me a good deal. I had never even thought about getting one of their trucks until then. When I think Mitsubishi I don't think "truck." Well after test riding some and a whole lot of wheeling and dealing. I left in a brand new '08 Raider.
I'm still in "freaked-out" mode from the shock of buying my first brand new vehicle ever, so be gentle. The reviews for the I've read have told me that it's under-powered and doesn't have the fit and finish of other brands. But I found it to be well made and it has enough power for me. I'm not going to try to drive it like the Eclipse. The real selling point was price, after looking at stripped down base models it was nice to find one with some nice features and a smooth automatic for the same price.

But the good part is now I can ride to Suches in comfort and with more amenities (I'll be grilling in March.)
And most importantly; Track Days Here I come!
I know I'm gonna hate filling that big tank up, but then that just gives me an excuse to ride my Buell more.

I don't have pics yet so for now here's a stock photo.

Does it have the LifeTime Powertrain warranty of the Dodge Dakota? The Rangers have pretty good off road prowess, but they get barely 15mpg. All of my buddies who've bought one with a 4.0 have traded it up. They can get a full size with better mileage...

My wife and I are actually trading in my Focus on something more practical as replacement. We're leaning towards a low mileage Cherokee. A good 'ol, 4.0, solid axle, Dana 30 up front, Dana 35 out back, an NP 231 transfercase and a Toyoter AW4 transmission. It'll get 20+ easily, with room for her, Gabe, myself, both dogs, groceries and I can still go off roading with my friends... The Focus is losing value less quickly and the Jeeps are dropping in price

I've got an '04 Dakota 4wd. The power from the v6 is a little disappointing but otherwise it's a very comfortable and reliable truck. I like the Mitsu version; its design is a little edgier.

If you've got the money, now is the time to buy. Stuff is going cheap!

I'd take one for a transport vehicle.
I had thought about buying an old van, stripping everything out of the back and building some racks for tools, spare tires, ect. on the sides and a slide/fold out ramp. Hell yea!
But more realistically a used pick-up would be better. I was going to just buy a cheap used truck but when I started noticing that the Elipse was rusting out from under me I decided that one good vehicle would be much better than two shabby ones.

I too was looking for a Chevy Astro van. I couldn't find any that weren't junk! So, here is my "new" race hauler...

Throw an inflatable mattress in the back and you can save $$ on hotel bills too.

Buyer's remorse. Everyone has been there, but if your checkbook can afford it just enjoy it.

That buyers remorse sucks, I get it everytime I get something that requires a little sacrifice of something else or tightening of the boot straps.

I've had my eye on a Ridgeline for quite sometime. The looks aren't that impressive but it does have everything I need to haul three kids and their bikes in plus some mulch from Lowe's. Now if they just built a four door El Camino we'd be in business.

you guys nailed it right on the head. Buyers Remorse.
It happens every time I buy something I want but know I could have lived without.
I guess it comes from growing up poor.

But I have to remind myself that I felt the same way when I bought the XB9S.
My head was screaming "You already have a bike why the hell are you buying another one? This is stupid!!"
But flash forward 9 months and 7,000miles and if you offered to buy it today for what I paid I'd laugh and say "No Way!"

Oil prices are dropping as is gas. I have an 07 Dakota with the Magnum V8 and get ok milage. I need the room (I have a 4 door) and the ability to tow a boat, so that left out an Accord. Besides that, I like sitting a little higher than cars. My gf had an Eclipse. thing sat so low it looked like I could drive under a horses legs.

Nice motorcyclist back up vehicle. If it pushes your buttons that is ALL that matters.

And for the digitales,
The stock photo is a photoshop too btw.
For that much speed blur on the ground the wheels become toothpaste too.

I drive an '04 AWD Astro for work. It has 120k mi. and doesn't use any oil between changes.

The fuel mileage is only 17mpg and I had to have them put stiffer springs on the back since it was sitting on the bumpers.

Other than that it isn't a bad vehicle. I have yet to get stuck with it even when I've pushed snow over the front bumper.

If I didn't have the bins inside I'd try to get a bike in it to take on road trips with me.

I just sprung for the Denali. I bought it the day that gas was hovering around $4.00 and you couldn't find any gas in the southeast. The Chevy dealer just gave me the dumb look like I'd lost my mind and it didn't help that my wife was sitting there giving me a similar look : ) It's as comfortable as anything going IMHO and you don't get them for the gas mileage.

One of the things I always cost out when buying, is the vehicle price compared to the consumption.

If you don't do too many miles it's frequently cheaper to buy something that uses more fuel, than buy something economical that has the consequent price premium.

Plus I'd rather walk away from a wrecked gas-guzzler, than die in a shoe-box!
