I have as much sympathy for her as I do for anyone who kills a motorcyclist stopped at a traffic light.

None.

I know that anytime Ive followed a motorcycle, I pay VERY close attention to them and what theyre doing.
I wonder if the cops are gonna investigate for a motive.

I've learned to withhold judgement on reports like this one until the rest of the story comes out. Still sad though.

I believe she should do jail time.

It's only fair. Zero tolerance.

people in general have no respect for motorcyclists. we are devients to them and take our chances every time we ride because thay shouldent have to pay the extra bit of attention to just see us! I was hit by a suburban after she cut across two lanes of traffic to get to an open spot in traffic. just so happens the open spot was me! even if she didnt mean to hit me just like this lady didnt mean to hit her husband( allegedly ) both deserve jail time. in a car you are "protected" on a bike you are not. Im done with my rant. sorry

Ditto cell phone.

Using one in a car should carry the same penelty as DWI.

Of course, I bet that tiny tail light mounted down low on the side of that fat tire custom wasn't exactly DOT legal either...

Well, they want to make separate changes for motorcyclists there for stunting and stuff. So I think they should have separate charges for drivers in cars who hit us.

Two thoughts

1) look at the photo of the bike, it clearly was some sort of custom chopper. Did it have a visible tail lamp?

2) being that she was in a 'vette and he on a chopper, maybe they were having a bit too much fun?

Either way it is sad event. : (

"maybe they were having a bit too much fun"

Or maybe they were just in a fight with each other and she might have hit the gas just a little bit too hard giving him a bit more of a bump than she had intended, we don't know yet. The bike probably cost more than the 'vette.

Scary shit for the rest of us. Moral of the story is, "Don't get in a fight with your gf/wife and take off on a bike. If you do, make sure you grabbed the keys to the `vette first."

Cataract,
Being a FL resident, I am doing my best to stay informed about the new bill HB137 2008 that is trying to make it's way through. The proposed penalties are extremly harsh for"stunting". Lose your endorsement, bike is siezed and then sold. All this at the discretion of the officer on the scene. If he "thinks" you were driving recklessly, you're toast.

Mental note:
Corvettes have worse brakes than choppers with weeble rear tires.

Here's the follow up to the original story, it has some additional details. Looks like she simply was not paying attention. It is a very sad story...

http://www.nws4jax.com/news/15249405/detail.html

"..Did it have a visible tail lamp?..."

In the photo in both links, you can see the typical side mounted vertical plate and it looks like the typical smallish single lens tail/stop light.

Those are far enough forward low enough that is does not take much of an angle from the rear for the tire to make the tail light invisible.

Not enough tail light for me, I couldn't enjoy riding anything that had been slathered with that much "cool".

To some it looks cool I guess, to me it looks like an invitation to get yourself rear-ended.

Here is an interesting Florida statistic. On 1 July 2000 they repealed their helmet law:

graph

I know stats can lie but it still makes me feel like being an ATGATT guy is worth the trouble.

Jack

I'll tell you, I don't know what this woman was feeling or planning or what, but you can ask my husband - this is my WORST fear. When I have to follow him in a car, I'm almost in a panic, because if something happens, I'm either going to be the one who causes it, or going to have the best view of my husband possibly getting killed.

I just plain don't do it unless I have to.

Of course, if I'm NOT following him, then a less careful person could cause an accident too - so I'd probably still feel guilty if something happened and I had let a few cars get in between us.

I don't know about her, but I'd never be right again. Never. Wonder if they had kids. Or grandkids. What a thing to have to explain.
