With the cams and spark plugs out and the trans in 5th gear, should there be anything keeping the engine from rotating through it's cycle? It seems to be stopping at TDC and I'm hoping for an explanation that doesn't have me pulling my heads off.

yeah... I pulled everything but the intake manifold last night. tonight I'll pull the rear head first. I'm just dreading what I may find.

next question... (and I confirm my novice status with this one...) an overbore of less that .005 should not require matching the head bore should it?

Found the problem. The "flat" .005 over pistons I purchased are not as flat as I had hoped. The piston has a rise that's hitting edge of the "bathtub" combustion chamber in the XP heads I'm using.

I can either dremal some material from the head (which may hinder the future head work I would like) or remove some material from the pistons.

I would strongly suggest that you don't remove material from the pistons.

Before you do anything, talk to someone that is really knowledgable on the subject.

Your better off to shave the head a little. If you trim the piston, you "thin it out" and create a hot spot on the piston where it could melt. Pistons look just like a round hunk of metal, but there is some serious design work in them.

You can use some modeling clay to check for clearances before final assembly.
