I’ve created a list of waypoints for all Buell dealers in the US and Canada. It can be found at http://www.princeton.edu/~blong/waypoints/. With an "any port in a storm" philosophy, I also created a list for Harley-Davidson dealers. Hope you find it useful.

I also created a waypoint list of all the RAN members in the US. Because access to the RAN list requires you be a registered user of BadWeb I’m not going to make it publicly available. Perhaps the board custodians/administrators could suggest how it could be distributed, or if should even be made available at all.

Hey Brian (XBNine), that is wonderful! I've PM'd you and if you can reply by email and attach your RAN listing waypoint list, I'll get it posted to the RAN page.

I guess we might ought to start asking RAN volunteers to provide zip codes too.

Very cool stuff. That took a heck of a lot of work to get done. : )

Blake,

I'll try and get this out to you Monday when I get back to work.

You hit the nail on the head with your zip code comment. The Buell and HD waypoints were easy compared to the RAN. I can automate the creation of the Dealership waypoints and send you an updated file periodically if you want.

Sadly, I can’t say the same for the RAN. The RAN file, as you've probably guessed, has the longitude and latitude of the town of the RAN member. With no zip code, I had to rely on the city and state to do lookups. With “State - City” values like "New Jersey - Central NJ" a lot of manual intervention was needed to create the file (checking profile pages, reverse phone lookup, etc ...). It’s all ready out of date because of the new additions since March. Is there any way to collect zip code so I can automate this as well?

Reepicheep,

I don't feel comfortable providing the "exact GPS coordinates" of a RAN members home, just the city they live in.

Having the LAT/LON coordinates may not be a bad idea, especailly if they were in a downloadable format like the geocache sites use. That way you could do a search of the nearest if you needed help without having to key in each waypoint.
Being able to give the RAN helper your location would be handy too.
I've never been called by a Bueller in need but have been able to help out in the past. It sure is nice to know there are people out there who are willing to help.

Iamike,

I don't understand your comment

The files are down-loadable and do have LON/LAT.

Nevrenuf,

I'm not familiar with the TomTom. What software are you using to load the GPX files and is the GPX format supported?

Brian,
Sorry, I should have said "since they are in a downloadable format". I meant not a bad idea because if you need help the RAN waypoints are already in your GPSr and you can do a 'GOTO' and find the nearest.

The unit that I use is an inexpensive Magellan that doesn't have a data interface. I don't mind entering waypoints manually as long as I don't have a lot to do.

I teach Map & Compass, plus Using a GPSr to scout leaders. It is always funny when they don't key in the coordinates right and head off in some odd direction looking for the waypoint. I use that as a learning experience as to the value of giving and using precise waypoints.

Nice idea. I'll need to update my RAN info though, being in the military means that will change periodically.

There would be some risk, that's fair... but because my last name if fairly unusual and I don't want to make a career out of trying to make myself invisible, my lattitude and longitude are only about four web clicks away regardless of if I give them to you or not.

I understand your concerns though, thats prudent.

Nevrenuf,

Your going to need to use the GPSBabel software I mentioned in my documentation to create an *.OV2 file. Once you've converted my *.GPX files into *.OV2 files it looks like you just follow these instructions on the TomTom website.

Hope this helps.
