Have we come up with a definitave answer to the front brake problems? (Locking up, binding, pulsating)
I have a '98 S1WL and have upgraded to the new rotor, RARELY use the front brake hard and still, it heats up to a high temp on some rides and I can feel it dragging.

Don't think a new Buell rotor/pads is the answer, not after reading posts from other guys.

Has anyone just given up on the Nissan brake system and gone to a single aftermarket caliper/rotor? Has anyone just rebuilt their old caliper and had it work fine?

Thanks,

Rob

I have a 98 S1W. I recently changed to the upgraded rotor. I have 28,700 miles on the bike. I have not had any problems with the brake dragging. I have heard someone say that the brake pucks can get dirt around them so they do not retract like they should. Perhaps you can examine the pucks, maybe clean then with a fine brush and brake cleaner. Good luck

Just a quick idea with the brake probs .... are you using the correct DOT brake fluid for the '98s?

I own a 1996 S2 Thunderbolt and unfortunately I am having major problems with my front brake rotor and carrier. I know there have been several upgrades since the bike first came out,but what I would like to know is if the part#ho2o1.r will fit. I was told by a Buell dealer/mechanic that even though it is specified to work on an M2,it would work for this bike. At the same time another Buell dealer/mechanic from a different store told me that it would not. I'm not sure who to believe. Can anyone help me with this ordeal?

For whatever reason, my front rotor has warped out again. Like I indicated earlier, this is the updated rotor (Installed with new pads by my beloved HD dealer) and it's about a year old with maybe 3k miles on it.

I've been noticing more and more pulsing every week this Summer while applying the brake (Just the front, I don't use the rear).

I'm going to go ahead and buy another new rotor and install it. Obviously there's a problem here other than just the rotor. They don't turn themselves into Pringles, something else is causing the problem. Do you guys think that a complete rebuild on the caliper is warranted (I don't mean warranted like warranty-type warranted!) here? I'm going to assume some alien goo got under the rubber boots and corodded my pistons somehow. Can I even rebuild it? Does Buell have a rebuild kit?

If not, who makes an aftermarket caliper or brake kit?

Thanks again for your help.

Oh Yeah...I've flushed the system a couple times and have used stock (DOT 5) replacement juice.

I have to do something, the vibration under braking is driving me nuts and probably bordering on dangerous.

Anony - brake rotor for S2: I've mounted the new Y2K rotor upgrade on my S2 - works just fine. I got the longer 12 point mounting bolts that ASB carries since I had trouble removing the stock Allen bolts. Rotor works fine, but make sure to get sintered pads. The EBC Green pads don't have much bite, and in a few hundred miles, the brake dust will cover the entire front of your bike.

Roblasonja,

Are you sure the rotor is actually warped? Other conditions can cause your front brake to pulsate. You might try simply removing the pads, cleaning them thoroughly and then lightly refreshing them by scrubbing them across ~120 grit sandpaper that is laying on a hard/flat surface. If your pads were contaminated with some foreign substance, they can wear unevenly and get grabby and goofy giving the impression that your disk is warped.

Blake,

Sounds like it can't hurt to try your idea. First thing Sat. morning.

I recently had the front caliper bind during a long ride. I was able to unstick it by grabbing and releasing the front brake repeatedly (while stopped). Not sure what caused it and it has not happened since.

I use my front brake a lot and wear the front pads out much sooner than the rear.

Isn't this Nissin caliper used on other bikes also? I think the Yamaha R1 uses the same pads, but I'm not sure the calipers are the same.

I also had a front rotor warp and cause a bad pulsation. The dealer replaced it under warranty and I've not had an issue with it since. I'm not sure what cause the first rotor to warp because, if anything, I've used the front brake even harder with the new rotor. It's still real smooth.

"Isn't this Nissin caliper used on other bikes also?"
I don't know offhand of any 340 mm disks being used on Sport Bikes other than Buells. Calipers would follow suit. Most other sport bikes use dual 320m disks.
