My bike isn't charging my Batt. I am told that the regulators are the things that go. So, I wanted to see how many of you guys have replaced your regulators or have another solution to this charging problem. $90 for regulator....ouch. |

I've seen more blown stators here then blown regulators. Of course. the stator is even more expensive Charge the battery, and disconnect the plug between the voltage regulator and the stator. Fire the bike up, and measure the voltage between the two pins on the side of the connector going to the stator. Make sure the meter is on *AC* Volts to do this. The manual tells you what the volts should be. If you don't want to start the bike, measure the resistence between the pair of pins, and measure the resistance between each pin and a good ground. The manual tells you what those should be as well. Or just pop the derby cover off, stick you nose in there, and take a BIG LONG WHIFF. If you are still able to eat dinner, it's probably not the stator The Knowledge Vault has all these figures as well. Stators are pretty easy to test pretty thoroughly. |

Like already said its probably the stator. Replace it with a good one from Accell. They run like $85 from Dennis kirk. Its a pain in the butt to remove the thing but can be done by most. |

I'd say Stator, Wanna see where they most frequently fail???? Not rubbing it in Reep but photos courtesy of the Digital Rebel. |

My regulator died last summer. I did all the tests according to the service manual, and everything checked out good. There's a little sentence at the end of the troubleshooting section that says, basically, if everything checks out good, and it still isn't charging,it's probably the regulator. It was. |

I was in my primary yesterday and smoothed the edges on the hold down plate over the stator wires. I'm going to be in there again and I think I split a short piece of 1/4" rubber fuel line and place it around those wires and under the plate. The plate should clamp it lightly and hold it in place. As is, the wires are not actually clamped by the plate, they are just behind it and can't get out far enough to be rubbed by the moving parts. But the wires can move around a little from vibration, should one ever occur on a H-D engine. :> Jack |

I feel your pain. My bike is on it's 3rd voltage regulator as of today. I don't blame poor build quality or engineering, I know my ex-girlfriend has put a hex on this bike. |
