Just returned from my first SD trip. While on the road I discovered why I carry such odd tools in my kit. It consist of one pair of vice-grips, one channel lock, an 8" cresent, philips and straight screwdrivers, flattened roll of duct-tape and some elctrical tape. The below repair used the duct-tape and vice-grips, w/ a couple of pieces of shock-cord taken off my netting. FYI, I added a small coil of stainless wire to the kit as soon as I got back to town.

Rob

quick fix

You do what you gotta do. You lay 'er down a 1000 miles from home and no other way to motate. The guys at J&L HD red-tagged me a new shifter but it still took 2 days to get it in and I had rounds to make. Rode that way for 3 days w/out a problem. Got a couple looks from the chrome and leather crowd, but hey, who gives a rat's patootie?

Good thinking, I just added a shifter to my "ditch" bag, along with my flat kit, etc.

Think a tool kit might be something to get for my trip.

BTW, doing things like this should get your into the Iron Butt Association. I mean come on. Your doing what's needed to keep riding.

I've never done a 1,000 mile day but I have done several 5-800 mile days. To be honest after 6 or 700 miles in the saddle I'm way ready to get off. I got nuth'n to prove to nobody, but myself, and myself says, "self, get your a$$ off this machine and find a barstool."

Yeah, but only just barely!! rode 550 miles the day Saturday of the ROT rally (all hill country stuff) and I was ready to get off!!!

Realistically (for me), my Corbin and me are comfortable with 350 miles at a time
before grabbin' a cold one...}}
