Just bought my bike a little over a month ago. 2000 X1 15000 miles some mods but not exactly sure what all is done to it. Anyway I haven't really had to much of a chance to ride it, only around the parking lot and my neighborhood a little bit, absolutely no hard riding at all, nothing even over 3000rpm. Anyway the check engine light comes on and I have only put around 20 miles on it(i know ride that thing). So I take it back to the unnamed dealership where I bought it as I have yet to recieve my extended warranty paperwork (not a HD/Buell dealer, another just shoot me statement) But said dealer has HD mechanics on staff as they are a reseller of the bikes. Anyway the bike has been there since last Wednesday, I called them Saturday "bike is on the rack, reset the CE light, it came back on, will know more on Monday" Call back Monday, "the mechanic who is looking at its day off". Go in on Wednesday bike is still on the rack, so I ask about it and get "waiting on diagnostic stuff from HD". Well it has been 8 days now and my guess is they haven't even put it on a computer to check the codes for what is wrong. Should I just keep being patient, or should I raise a stink about it. I am new to the street bike world and am wondering if I am being to antsy as it is prime riding season, or if I should really start to think that I am getting the hose job and a bike that they didn't want anything to do with in the first place. Another question if anyone can help, I know there are probably a 1000 different reasons why the CE light would come on, but what are some common reasons for it to come on and stay on? Sorry about the questions, just wondering what others would do. Should I just say screw it and take it to a Buell shop myself or wait it out. I just want to be riding my new investment. Jake | ||

Take it to a Buell shop! Il HD/Buell would be my first choice if I lived in Chicago. Tell Sam I sent you. They will take care of you. | ||

PS, You could also take it to Lakeshore. Talk to Ponytail Kevin in sales. He's a good guy too. | ||

Jake, You can short out two pins on the diagnostic connector mounted under the right-front area of gas tank, then turn on ignition and read the sequence of CE light flashes. These sequences are described in the shop manual and will tell you why the light came on. Very useful. What area of Chicago are you located? | ||

thanks for the info fly, I am in East Rogers Park, pretty close to the Chicago HD, but I have heard that they aren't one of the better Buell dealerships and was a bit afraid to ride all the way to Illinois HD to have it looked at because I didn't know exactly what was wrong with it and didn't want to grenade the thing on the way. Plus not knowing the roads all that well... thats another thing I need is the shop manual, not to mention an original owners manual. I really went into this blind which I hope wasn't a major mistake on my part. I really appreciate everyones replies and help though!! Jake | ||

Jake, Let me know if you want help to locate and short out the pins, then interpret the sequence of light flashes. I have a fuel injected S3T and shop manual, the diagnostic codes are the same between models. It may give you a better idea of what's wrong and if it's OK to run the engine (at least to a dealer if you don't want to fix it yourself). As a note, I've been on the road and had engine light come on and ridden it over 100 miles. The engine did not run strong, but it ran good enough to motor home. The diagnostic codes helped me locate the problem area and fix it once I got home (wire for sensor in airbox had an intermittent open-circuit). I would have never persisted looking there without the diagnostic codes because everything looked OK from a visual perspective. | ||

fly that would be great, I am going to get on "unnamed" dealership tomorrow about it, at least to put a bit of a charge in them. Then I will either have the bike back by Saturday night or know exactly what is going on with it. I just spent so much money there that I think that if they knew something was wrong and sold it to me anyway then they should help out in the diagnostics at least. Quote "Mint plus extras". I always thought mint meant great quality and nothing wrong... I will keep in touch, hopefully it is just a sensor or a loose wire, because the bike was running fine. oh ya, I have a really screwy work schedule so figuring out a time to do get together and look at it might be tough... Fly, you have me curious about this short out the pins on the diagnostic port connector thing. i have a service manual that can tell me what codes are what. What two pins do you short? If you have the service manual it tells you how to make the jumper and what pins to jump. From memory I believe it is pins 1 and 2. I took a 3 inch piece of 18g wire and (2) 18-22g splice connectors to make my jumper. It worked great. Got my code, and replaced my O2 sensor (trouble code 13) and am good to go!! | ||

It really is a very simple process. Jake dont buy an Buell from CCC, they dont have harley guys on staff, no matter what they told you, plus they dont have the equptment to service your bike, and its going to sit while they try and figure out how to erase the code, ride it south to IL harley, its only a few miles talk to Doc in service(hes the Buell guy and the sevice manager) and get it fixed right the first time Just my 2 cents, but there the only people in chicago i would let touch my bike, and that says a lot, i even let them do work on my bike and i was happy when they were done Docs good people and even likes Buells R | ||

thanks for the feedback guys, I am picking it up tomorrow AM as I have to work tonight, called today said I could pick it up tonight. We will see, I would like to run it down to IL HD tomorrow to see if they actually did anything to it but I have a work related picnic tomorrow also. This sucks because I don't know when I will be able to take it down there because I work such screwy hours and won't have a ride home from IL HD. Is there any public trans that would get me back to Rogers Park from IL HD?? Jake | ||

From IL harley, you could take the Harlem bus to the blue line, or just walk to the blue line Blue line to red line, then either stop near where you live or transfer to a bus, not that big of a deal, but a good 45 mn to 1 hours trip pretty easy really R | ||

I agree with these guys. The shop that has your bike is unable or unwilling to fix it. Go someplace else, before they screw it up, and never go back. Just because they sold you the bike does not mean that they able or willing to service it. I think the tube frame bikes were the best ones. Get the shop manual and you should be ok. Have a good shop (when you find one) check the vin number to be sure that all of the recalls were done. I don't remember if that model had any but you should check to be sure. Good luck. | ||

I agree also about finding a different shop. i wish my local dealer was closer than 95 miles. The local Harley shop is a joke even to the local harley owners | ||

thank you everyone! I am going to get my "fixed" bike in about 6 hours, just got home from work, full day tomorrow without work  I am planning on making a trip down to IL HD/Buell per everyones suggestions. The bad part is that I am from a car family and have worked at dealerships myself.... I guess I just have the "it can't happen to me" mind set... Oh well, live and learn. By the way anyone in Chi Town that could possibly give me some pointers about my bike don't be afraid to get in touch. I want to learn about my bike and would really like to meet some people in my area to ride with and show me the roads around Chicago. got my bike back this morning, air temp sensor replaced is what was stated on my billing statement along with Contractor being Chicago Harley. So CCC must of outsourced it but I'm pretty sure the bike never left the building. Still planning on taking it down to IL HD/Buell to get a once over when I get a chance. Thanks for all of the suggestions and help. Anyone know where I could pick up a Owners manual and Shop manual for my bike? Should I go through Buell directly or a dealership? seems to be running just fine also, took it out for about an hour later in the day, wish I could have ridden longer but to much to do. Jake | ||

You should be able to order a Manual right off the internet from one of several on line sources. That's how I got mine. | ||

The service manual is 52.20 Badweb price Parts manual is 43.20 Badweb price. I'd get the service manual first if I were you. Then add the parts manual later. It is valuable for seeing how the stuff goes together. | ||

Jake, Sorry I never returned your PM's. I used to live in the northern suburbs, but have recently moved to the southwest burbs. I spent a lot of growing years in Evanston and Rogers Park.
