I have a 2001 M2L, and was wondering if anyone has changed to the 26 tooth transmission sprocket. If so did it reduce the cruising RPM's dramatically, and how did it effect the overall feel. i feel the bike really needs a sixth overdrive gear for cruising and was wondering if i could get by with changing a 250 dollar sprocket instead of getting a 2500 dollar baker 6 speed tranny. thanks for the input in advanced!!!

You've got that backwards, John. Stock is 29 teeth, so if you reduce it you get better wheelies, a lower top speed, and higher revs on the highway. S1's (and 883 Sportsters) come with a 27.

Just put a new stock one on the S1 for $75

If you want to reduce your rpms you need to get a european 55 tooth rear sprocket. Smaller front = higher rpms.

I've always wanted a 28 tooth front sprocket for the S2. The 29 tooth stock sprocket puts me at too low RPM for my preferred cruising speed. I tried the 27 tooth sprocket, but it bumps the RPMs up to a slightly "buzzy" level at cruising. So 28 teeth would seem like a good compromise.

However, all I found were pricey aftermarket items.

There's a nice version with a steel center, aluminum outer ring and some sort of poly inbetween. Would seem like a good way to go - can't remember manufacturer name.

my m2 came with a 27...went with a 29 front from the s2, and a six speeed.....cruises nicely at 70-80 now.....rex

M2 comes with a 27 tooth. I changed mine to a 26 and it made the bike much smoother for city riding. Even on the highway, I have not missed any top end.

The 29 tooth gave a nice cruise - but at just a few hundred RPM too high for my preference.

What RPM do you cruise at? When I ride with my 26 tooth sprocket I can do 60 on the city freeway and never leave 4th gear. The bike stays right around 4,000 rpm. Unless I am out in the country I never touch fifth? I can't imaging having a 29 tooth sprocket. Sometimes wish I had a taller sprocket in the back to lower the ration a little more.

If I'm not mistaken there should be a chart sat in the archives that gives comparison between most (all) common pulley sizes and RPM's including European pulleys and the Baker 6 too.

The guys i run with cruise around or about 80-85mph or a little over 4k in the rpms on my M2L 2001 that came with a 27 tooth tranny sprocket stock. I live in south georgia so we have long straightaways with few curves witch completely goes against owning a buell. when i'm riding at that speed i feel as if the bike is out of pulling gear. I am 6'3" 240lbs so it just might be telling me to loose weight. The power band on my bike feels as though it is between 2700-4000rpm. I have the buell super trap exhaust, the carbon fiber race intake, mikuni 42mm carb, and running the buell splitfire plugs. don't get me wrong the bike will still go from 85mph but i just wish i could drop it down maybe 500 rpm at 80-85 mph.

Interesting. I am 6'3" and about 230lbs. I just did a track day with my bike and found that it pulled best between 3500 and 5500. I just had it dyno'd this spring, I will have to look at the chart. My bike seems best when above 3500.

For longer distances I prefer to cruise at around 70 - 75 mph. At that speed, the 27 tooth sprocket put me just about, or a hair over 4000 RPM. My S2 is smooth as glass at about 3700-3800 RPM. Starts to get a tiny bit buzzy over that - not much at all but still.

I just put a 27 tooth on my S1 (motor was originally out of an S3T). I noticed a HUGE
"seat of the pants" increase in low end torque. Overall, I'm running at about 2900 RPM in fifth at 60mph. The 29 tooth runs at about 2750 at the same speed.
