I really like the look of the stock airbox (it's actually kind of rare nowadays.) But do I need the snorkel inside the box, or can I remove it?

Rip it out,
vent your breather lines outside the box,
get rid of the cup around the filter and stock filter then smash down a aluminium pop (soda for you non Michiganders) can drill two holes in it and use that to hold your air fliter on.
Or fab a bracket up which ever is easiest for you.
Then use it to hold on a new K&N filter and your done!
Then tune that biotch up!

Yeah just make sure your jetting is ok an your ready to go,
The snorkle is there to cut down on Intake noise using the Hiemholtz principle.

Venturi P/N 29179-88 Venturi Ring
This is the part to replace the helmholtz tube. It's cheap. ( see knowledge vault carb section for jetting info )
See the Knowledge vault, airbox intake & filter section. Heck, it has a pic of my airbox!
You WILL hear your valves.
I routed the front breather out via the rear breather hole in the breadbox, & bought the Sportster banjo setup for the rear. Use a catch can, is my cheap advice, just filters on the breather lines always puke on you.
