My S1 has a small flat piece attached to the frame, and the back of my rear brake lever has a little adjustable screw that presses against it, functioning as a lever stop to keep the lever from moving upward, and pulling the rod down out of the master cylinder. I've noticed X1 levers no longer have this. Is someone with an X1 able to take a look at their rear brake setup and tell me if anything keeps the lever from moving the opposite direction? I've looked at pictures of X1 frames online and don't see anything on the frame similar to what the S1 has. I have an X1 lever I was going to put on my bike, didn't know if it's worth trying to weld a small threaded aluminum piece on the back, or just run it as is, knowing theres not really a reason that lever would ever be pulled upwards. | ||

On my S3, that tab has been broken for years. Yes, I have knocked the rod out of the brake piston while the motor was parked. Never has come out while riding, so I have not welded on a new tab. NOTE: I ride with the brake and shifter low enough to cover with my boots without activating them. This could be why the brake lever has never bounced out while riding. On my 2000 X1 ive changed the rear brakes several times. From original X1 Nissen setup then to Earlier Brembo caliper setup. It was at that stage that i found that the brembo rear master cylinder doesnt have a circlip holding the piston pin into it like the nissen one does. That is why the X1 doesnt need the adjustable screw to prevent the piston pin from droping out. The X1 pin has a circlip. | ||

That's actually great info and good timing. I had forgotten I asked this. I've given up on using the X1 brake lever, because even though it fit, the X1 boomerang shift lever does not. I do currently have a newer Nissin setup that's supposed to arrive in the mail today, so it's good to know when I get it on my S1 and start messing with brake levers, I won't need to worry about the lever stop. I do have a set of X1 banke levers that'll eventually go on. The difference between the S1 and X1 levers is that the S1 lever has a half circle milled out of the back just for the lever stop that's welded to the frame, and the back of the X1 lever is just flat. I have an endmill bit and I planned on trying to see if I can take a small notch out with my drill press. Knowing the newer MC doesn't need it, I guess I could always just grind down that tab on my frame. I'd always prefer to modify a brake lever than a frame, but in all honesty, Banke parts are probably worth more than an S1 frame at this point haha. |
