eBay has some new Andrews close ratio (2.61) 1st gear sets (countershaft and main shaft) that are going to be cheaper for me than the Harley parts. The Andrews part number is 299110. Does anyone with transmission gear experience know if they'll work? I have the 1st gear skipping out issue, and have replaced the detent plate, clutch, etc. etc. The eBay listing specifically claims the parts are compatible with sportsters 883 and 1200 of the same year, but Buell comes up as a no-fit.
Does anyone know for sure? I’m guessing because you’re getting a pair, that they should work, but I’ve never taken a transmission out of a bike – never needed to until now.
I’m not really concerned about a higher 1st gear ratio, as I can easily change the rear sprocket to a larger one (I have a chain conversion). I just want to lose the skipping in 1st gear. Too unnerving, especially when turning left in front of a bus…

I've done a lot of searching of badweb archives for a similar problem and I think others have complained the Andrews gears don't play nice with adjacent gears for some reason.

I suspect an extra shim in between the tightest gears would solve the problem, Harley elf I think has attacked this problem successfully on the cheap, hope he chimes in.

Seems like Andrews gears worked for these guys:

But not for this guy:

It looks like you have to buy the Andrews gears in pairs or sets.

Thanks H0gwash. I've read everything I could get my hands on about this issue, and having never had a transmission in my hands, decided to yank it out a couple of days ago, hoping to find something obvious. I didn't disassemble the gears from the shafts, but everything looked good to my untrained eye. I ended up installing some springs between the shift forks (as per a thread I saw on XL forums), but sadly, it still skips occasionally when pulling off hard in 1st. I think I'll try to get my hands on a known good transmission, as it wasn't really apparent that new 1st and 3rd gear countershaft gears would have looked any different. The only thing I was surprised at, was the amount of looseness there was on some gears on the shafts. I could really wobble some of those, but the shafts themselves (and gear bores) didn't look worn. One thing I do know, is that the bolts that hold the tranny/trap door on aren't the factory socket head bolts, so the PO must have been in there...

Check out the related thread at http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/476 23/819247.html?1516680043 Harleyelf describes how he solved his gear skipping problem simply by reshimming... that and replacing all the gears in the tranny with Chinese gears for $65.

The difference between sharp dogs and worn out dogs on the gears is kinda subtle, I can't really read the wear on the dogs that well. I ended up shipping my tranny to Florida where they backcut my tranny and did other related repairs for I think $1300 which included shipping. The backcutting work was probably unnecessary to solve the skipping issue, but boy the tranny is nice and snickety now.

You may be able to find a local Harley shop where the transmission guy has a cradle for Buell transmissions, such a guy will have a trained eye for such things.

Note: I still have a hard time finding neutral sometimes.

Note 2: I had a spare tranny which I slapped in for kicks. It skipped as well.

Thanks again for your input. I had previously read that thread, which is what had me looking for alternatives to the gears available in Canada, leading me to the eBay pairs of Andrews stuff. A single 1st gear countershaft sprocket is over $230 CAD from my local HD dealer, so I didn't even bother looking up the 3rd gear countershaft cost, especially given that I couldn't really see if that was the issue during my brief inspection. If I could get a full set of offshore gears for reasonable $, I would be all over them, but I can't seem to uncover a source. Attaching springs under tension to the shift forks hasn't really changed the behavior much (if any), but taking everything apart with the subsequent adjustment on reassembly seems to have made a positive change in finding neutral. Still have the intermittent skip in 1st though, usually controlled by Murphy's law - happens at the worst time. Not bad enough to park it, but I do have to be careful starting off, and avoid hard launches until this is solved.

After a very long winter, I'm not in the mood to have the bike parked while waiting for parts. I think I'll keep my eyes peeled for replacements, and take the transmission out at the end of the season, so I can play with it at length, until I gain a solid understanding of how it works (or doesn't work).
