You can get the rear shock rebuilt for around $200 from RaceTech. Or buy a new Works or Penske rear shock for $800/1000

Fork seals with gold valving for another $250/300 from RaceTech.

Seals, depending on who does the work, can be expensive and, most importantly, time consuming!

If you immediately sold it after leaving the CAR dealer, most people wouldn't give you more than $3500. So, look at it this way. Are you willing to pay a CAR dealer 12.5% more for the privilege of owning a 20 mile bike. As Essmjay said above, "I would rather buy a 20 year old bike that was ridden regularly and taken care of than a 10 year old mystery bike". I concur.

I bought my first Buell, the 1125r, in May 2010, from a custom/used bike dealer. Paid about a $1k premium over the fire-sale price they got when Buell shut the doors.

Here's my first X1 Lightning journey...http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/21/ 598790.html?1290052646

Since then, I've spent about $1500 on it.

Bought another X1 locally, from a dealer, within 45 days of first one. When they delivered it to my garage, within days, the rear shock was dripping the last of it's oil out of it. Tried to negotiate some money back...and got nothing! Ironically, this dealer was right across the street from my first Buell purchase, the 1125r!

I'm just trying to show you that the initial $4k you are willing to pay is only the beginning of a probable $5000+ journey.

Sometimes the best bike purchase is from an individual that shares your passion for riding and knows what he/she is selling you! My first X1 Lightning purchase and my last Buell purchase, my S2T Thunderbolt, were the best. And they were private sellers who knew their bikes and knew I'd care for them as they did.

I completely understand where you are coming from regarding buying from someone who has maintained their bike. I also understand that the bike will need some money thrown at it over the course of the next year. That could be the case with any used bike though. There are hundreds of moving parts that don't wear at the same rate. I called two really reputable local Harley shops, and both said that they wouldn't worry about the seals--which I still doubt--they did mention tires and doing a level one service though. I've never bought a "new" bike. I've picked up the majority of them from owners similar to those that you describe. Even then there is unavoidable wear and tear that happens when a bike is ridden. It was really crazy to see this thing with out any of that. All of the factory paint marks, decals, lettering--zero road grime or any sign of pitting. I have looked at the other bike listings for under $4K and there haven't been any that jumped out at me. For some reason, I want a bike that is completely original and stock--for some reason the older bikes get, the better they look all original to me. I have seen a few 2009 1125CR models for around $6K with under 10K miles on them that have got me thinking though.....

I wanted to go look at this bike as well- almost identical to my old X1, just minus the mods.

I hope it works out well for you. I was willing to pay the $4k myself

+1 on steering clear of the HD dealers. If you can't learn to work on this bike do not buy it. There is very little on this bike that a competent owner cannot repair himself. The worst repair stories ever heard have come from the dealers.

If its worth $4 grand to you than buy it.
I know id ask that much for mine if i had to........i cant bring myself to say it.........to........to.......sell......my 00 X1.
Tearing up at just the thought of it.
You wont regret your purchace as your thundering down the road and people asking "what kind of bike is that???"
Never look back

Ive rebuilt many more motorcycles than chicks for sure!..ok time for me to sign off...Im clearly in one of those moods!

Yep, I ended up buying it. I gave the dealership a final offer of $3,700 and he ended up contacting me two days later accepting it. The bike definitely needs a little cosmetic help, but everything looked so clean compared to other bikes I was looking at. I was going to go look at a 2000 racing stripe with the Buell full race exhaust, optional seat and PM wheels with 8K for $3,500 when the first dealership sent me the email. I was kinda looking for a new project and this thing fit the bill. My intention is to keep it completely stock, aside from the tank graphics and some bar end mirrors, so if anyone has an extremely clean air box(both sides) or an '02 white(not painted) brake/right side chin spoiler that would be a good place to start. Thanks guys--I'm sure I'll be hitting you up along the way as I get this thing ready for the road!

My local dealership has some X1 take off scoops. I saw them in this years take-off-parts sale. I can go ask after them if you'd like, seems like they were just REALLY dusty. Prolly pretty cheap if they'll sell them now that the sale is over and they moved them back upstairs...

Sure Mzoomora. It's in Wauconda at Monster Powersports. I haven't seen it in person, but it looks like it was loaded up with all the right expensive options. They have a clip of the bike running with the race exhaust online and it sounds really nice. The red/white stripe bodywork, PM wheels and black frame is a great combo....

Thanks. This one you bought is the same color combo as my old X1 which got totaled. When I owned it I always thought I wanted a carbon one, blue, etc, but looking back I really like the white/nuclear blue.

Enjoy the bike!
