While I was replacing the primary tension shoe, I noticed the following wear marks on the oil hoses. The location is right behind the primary, just underneath the oil tank.

There is a light film of oil around the area, but the bike does not leak, ie. there are no drips or puddles under the bike.

Is this a common problem? Should I replace the hoses? Is it very difficult? Anyone else have this happen?

Very easy to replace and even re-route.. just do one at a time and follow it from your oil tank top and bottom and in and return lines. Check for signs of leaks at oil pump as the fittings are tight against the case and fittings. Typically the hose clamps come loose there also and wear right at the 90 degree bend.

Btw the light film of oil more than likely is your starter seal... good time to replace that as well while you are in there.

My feed hose got rubbed through on a 400mi trip. I ended up re-routing them and doing braided hoses with aluminum AN fittings.

Route hoses so there will be less chance of wear spots !!!

Where there could be a possible wear spot "i" take an old piece of hose(3 inch) and split it an placing it over the hose ...

there's protective sleeving the factory supplied on those hoses. Is the wear we see actually the protective sleeve? Or is the sleeve missing? I pay meticulous attention to the way the factory routes wiring and hoses. The Service manuals even show diagrams on proper placement.

I'll look around for my source of that protective covering

I searched high and low for the factory sleeve, it tends to get brittle over time. Could not find it anywhere, by the foot in black. I found it in white, red & grey, but no black.

I ended up using this - http://www.designengineering.com/category/catalog/ dei-cycle/line-sleeving/fire-sleeve-tape-kits - much more flexible. Seems to be withstanding the test of time, and heat.

I did also a re-route through a few tight spots.

Mine rubbed a pin hole in exactly the same spot, pissed oil out when hot.

It appears there is a sleeve around the hose as ducxl suggests. However, I think the wear mark is all the way through the outer sleeve and into the hose itself.

Since the bike is 14 years old, probably time to replace the oil hoses anyway due to age corrosion. Had to do the same on my tour glide at 12 years old since the oil lines had become so brittle.

Any suggestions on where to route the new lines? How about the the best braided oil line and lengths? I've never used AN connectors. Any modifications needed to the oil pump or tank? Can I get this from an auto parts store or will I need to order online?

@weatherbyman: I had already bolted it up before I saw your post. I'll put on the list next time I'm in there.

Here's>>>>>cableorganizer.com<<<<a good place to look for the protective sleeving.

I'd stay as close to stock routing as i've said before.I worried about kinks/obstruction when i'd replaced my lines a few years back.

I tried to reroute mine to prevent chaffing
and found the factory routing to be the only correct one that prevents hose kinks.
They bought bulk hose and did it this way to conserve cost. if you find some formed hoses you might find another alternative
but i would put it back the way it was.

I only re-routed my return line. All the hoses and parts came from Summit Racing. The hoses on the oil bag are just clamped on. It'll probably stay that way until I get an aluminum oil tank.
