should there be play in the front rotor? The bolts seem tight but they don't hold the rotor snug from not moving at all, it has some play left to right but not front to back. Is this right? Should I change the bolts? Or is the rotor bad?

What's moving, the rotor or the carrier? The rotor is supposed to move, the carrier is not.

Unless you have the 2000 or newer rotor, they rattle. Other than the noise and low speed sound of your bike falling apart, especially when coming up to a stop, get used to it.

Unless...you want to spend $$$ to replace.

It's a great stopping rotor, albeit noisy!

By the way, AL at American Sport Bike sells the newer version and the service manual which gives you the torque specs.

And something else, don't reuse brake hardware. Not a good practice. Buy new!

I thought I read here (KV, some time back) you could just add a wave washer to each mounting point on the old style rotor to reduce the play, and the rattle?

That's why they're called Floating rotors.

Buy the wave rotor from Al @ American Sport Bike. You will be amazed by the performance of that rotor.
