Could you not turn the shifter shaft over and accomplish what you are looking for?

I'm assuming you still have the banana shifter? That might create an issue.

And flip the shifter shaft lever around.

If you have up-dated your SHIFTER to "SHIFTER KIT" PN 49074-01Y all you do the reverse the direction of SHIFT LEVER,engine PN T0225.01A1 for the reverse pattern ...

Try www.AmericanSportBike.com FIRST, then GOOGLE the PART NUMBER, and last, try your local BUELL SERVICE CENTER at your Participating HARLEY-DAVIDSON STEALERSHIP !!!

Wow thanks for all the info guys.

I have the stock crescent moon shifter for the 99 x1. as far as i know of the reverse linkage trick doesn't work with that set-up.

also im located in pittsburgh, i called the 3 nearest harley/buell dealers and service dept. they said they cant help me i have to go through an outside distributor.

but i'll check the site above and if anyone knows a way to make the creseant moon shifter work, let me know!! lol

so after looking at the way the aftermarket shift linkage for the x1 mounts i was wondering if there is any reason i could not just use the linkage from an xb12s? here is a pick of the linkage from an xb12s. reason being i can get the xb shifter for $50 as compared to the $150+ for the x1 aftermarket. any thought??

My understanding is that the XB shifter WILL NOT work on a tuber because of the location of the pegs.

There is an updated shifter kit available for the X1:

http://www.latus-harley-davidson.com/Shifter-Kit.h tm

I am running a B2R race kit right now and LOVE it. It will allow you to run either standard or reverse shift pattern by reversing the shifter shaft lever.

There will be a group buy through Bumpus HD/Buell on these coming up very soon.

A SPORTSTER shift lever that points to the front the pattern is down for low an up for the higher gears ...

If you get the shift lever that points to the rear the shift pattern then would be up for low and down for the higher gears which is good for drag racing ...

THE LESS LINKAGE YOU HAVE IN THE LEVER THE BETTER THE SHIFTING WILL BE !!!

I agree. However, the longer throw provides greater mechanical leverage and easier shifts.

The banana shifter suffers from magnified slop. The longer the lever the greater the degree of deflection. The long lever near the shifter and the long lever attached to the shifter shaft create very imprecise shifting. Add to that any primary chain or clutch maladjustments, and shifting gets ugly.

I bought the B2R shifter kit because it provided two advantages. First, the long throw of the shift shaft maintained the mechanical leverage keeping shift effort about the same as the banana shifter.

Second, the separate shifters in the kit are all short (shifter shaft, mid-shifter, foot shifter). This keeps the free play slop to a minimum.

The result is easy shifting with very little slop. I have tried the updated shifter kit. Slop is minimized, but shift effort is increased.
