Author Message   Psyclown Posted on Friday, August 19, 2011 - 03:11 pm:        I checked my primary chain when I did an oil/trans oil change the other day and all was good. I started getting a whiney sound after I ride for 30 minutes or so at idle. It lessens when I pull the clutch in. It is right between 5/8" to 3/4" at the tight spot. My throw out bearing was totally shot at 15K miles but my symptom was the clutch kept going out of adjustment no matter what. Don't recall any whining but I did not listen for it.   Buellistic Posted on Tuesday, August 23, 2011 - 12:01 pm:        IMHO, the primary chain should be adjusted "NO TIGHTER THAN 3/4 INCH" on the tight spot because when you run a BUELL hard the engine expands laterally ... It still get a little chain slap when pulling hard from a low rpm, so if anything it is on the loose side. I'm wondering if the clutch adjustment could produce a sound. It only happens when hot.   Jim2 Posted on Tuesday, August 23, 2011 - 03:41 pm:        To troubleshoot a non-specific problem like this you must come up with a list of ideas and systematically eliminate them one-by-one. Usually you start with the easiest, most likely, and work your way toward the more difficult and less likely ideas. I would start with this small list. -Vary the clutch adjustment and see if the whine goes away. Very easy to do. and non-invasive. -You may also slightly vary the amount of primary fluid. 1/8" up or down on the level line and see if it makes a difference. I'm not sure if this should even be on the list but it certainly easy to do. -Replace the throw-out bearing as suggested. -Vary the primary chain adjustment by a small amount. You can count turns from where you already have it and return it back when done experimenting. If any of these ideas don't make the whine go away then you make a new list.   Cyclonecharlie Posted on Tuesday, August 23, 2011 - 03:42 pm:        Check your drive belt, counter shaft will whine if excessively tight.
