My s1 shock was leaking so I want to get a used 16.5" shock from a donor bike, to hold me over untill i can shell out a grand for a new aftermarket one.

Since Im looking at an s3 shock, guy says no leaks, good shock, from a parted out s3. Is the s3 shock stiffer? or is it identical to the s1 shock? Even though it looks the same, it could be different, is the weight rating higher or lower on the s3?

Pretty sure it has a heavier spring, I don't know about any valving differences they may have.

that is probably good news. Since im looking to do 2up riding with my lady, the heavier spring may be just what the doctor ordered.

I tried 2up riding once on my 99 S3. I weigh about 215 and my 17 year old daughter weighs about 125 and it seemed to be way to much weight for the shock. I would not do any 2 up riding on your stock shock.

well i missed the one on ebay, but I am going to be considering going to a works shock in the near future.

I have the stock s1 shock on it now, and a back up s3 shock layin in the garage. I am considering going through these two before shelling the 1,000 for a works ultrasport ACR.

But to clarify, Its advised to get a stiffer shock for 2-up riding, but are we talking for better performance, or because the stock shock will explode...

You need the stiffer spring to support the heavier load.

I understand, but we arent bottoming. So my questions is, what negative effect are we having on the shock by continuing to right.

I can feel its a lot softer when were are both on it. Im 195 and my lady is 140. So obviuosly the bike rides lower, and softer. But if we arent bottoming out, is the shock still being damaged. Are we going to blow the seals out.

Im already working on getting the ultrasport, but in the meantime...
