So I searched and read and searched and read and I am still a little confused. My apologies for beating this dead horse.

I bought my 01x1 with 5500mi. At 5800 I had my local dealer put new tires on it change all the fluids and give it a once over. I checked my oil almost every ride 10 mins in so I was good and warm. For the the first 800 miles or so oil never moved from the halfway mark. During this time my catch can was filling with the expected gloop. Over the next 800 miles it consumed half a quart. These 800 were ridden harder of course. I did notice a little of the gloop coming out of my breather and assumed I had over filled and didn't drain my catch can soon enough.

Yesterday I put almost 200 miles on her. And I abused the hell out of her. Keeping her above 4500 occasionally hitting the rev limiter, and finally using my rear tire edge to edge! Only flogged her hard 15 to 20 miles at a time. Not the whole 200. Before I headed home I check my oil and it barely touched the tip of the stick. And I notice straight up oil dripping out my breather.

I guess my question is... do these motors gulp oil when you ride hard.?. I figure I have gone through a quart in the last 1800mi or so.. I favor left hand turns and that's the side my breather is on but I doubt that I am pouring oil out with the g's in a turn keeping it down.

One thing I found recently.. someone mentioned checking level while running?!?! Is this correct?

Btw... best ride yet! Love my x1! The more I trust her the more fun we have.

Thanks guys!

Yeah mine does.
It will run forever without consuming anything at 75 miles per hour.
As soon as I got to the northern Texas/Oklahoma/Arizona area and held it at 105 miles per, it started to hate me after a few hundred miles.
This was when it only had 10,000 on it too.
I find mine likes being flogged, then rested in a cycle. Try not to hold it to a high RPM for long periods of time.

Short controlled bursts!
I remember when they were running the X1 racing series in Fuell. There were a lot of DNF on those races!

These bikes are great fun and can last a long time(mine has topped 85,000) but they don't like being revved over 5K all the time.

I owned my bike for 6 months and it might have used a half a quart in that entire time. When I went cross country and started doing a lot of miles just cruising at 80+mph, it started using a lot of oil. When I hit the Black Hills, the oil light came on. I added 2 quarts and it still wasn't on the stick. I think I added another 3 by the time I got to California.

Now that I'm back home and just riding around the local roads and highways which don't have as high of speed limits, my oil consumption is back down to just about nill. All I can gather is that high rpms just burn more of it, so plan ahead.

I also don't fill past halfway on my stick, anything more than that is just going to to get spat in your airbox, down the side of the bike and all over your leg (or you breather/catch can setup).

Not while running - the tank is pressurized and you'll get pretty messy that way.

The kicker is you also can't check it if it's been sitting for a while as some will drain back into the engine from the tank. Bike should be warmed up, but not running and on the sidestand.

I check mine hot after riding on the side stand so the oil level is just touching the lower mark.
With the bike upright the level will be about 3/8-1/2 inch above the lower mark.

Ok... thanks guys. I have a feeling part of my problem was it being a little overfilled. Last time I filled it I went half way with it upright. I did do it immediately after shutting the engine off though.

I am sure I get some blow by when riding hard as you do with most things. My Honda 450 gets abused, WFO 90% of the time. But I change the oil before every ride.

One thing I did more than usual on my last ride was engine braking. On the tight sections I wasn't using my brakes much, just rolling up and down the throttle. 4-6k. Probably a habit I need to break.

There's plenty of engine braking at 3k rpm, so you don't need to hold the revs so for that.

With you guys spending that much time above 4k rpm, I'm not surprised you're using a lot. Mine rarely goes over that.

Maybe I will be nicer to her after I get my pipe and tune sorted.

I tend to flog her so hard because she seems to make power best between 5000-6500.

Under 5 it pulls but not hard. Maybe I am expecting too much. Maybe she hasn't run right since I bought her. I have never ridden one and have nothing to compare it to.

@ newrider
I am new to buell too. The first time I rode it icracked the throttle open to see what it would do. When the motor cut out at 6500 I thought there was a problem with the motor! I looked down to see I was at red line! I was so used to my GPz 11000 red line. Since then I have adapted and ride my x1 all the time. The great thing about buell is is chugs through the corners so nice. Keep riding you will adapt and love it.

i agree with him,,just learn to love and use the power it gives you.. i was keeping up with 1125CRs the other day in the corners ,,so it does go.
