Well the '98 S1W I asked about before is officially mine. I brought it home last night, rolled it out of the garage and took a couple quick pictures. It's dirty, dirty....going to take a lot of polishing and cleaning to undo the effects of eight years of a humid basement. I just have the exhaust hanging on it to save some room in my garage. The top end gasket set and a battery will be ordered in the next few days. The local import bike shop keeps drag specialties 20w-50 oil and their primary oil on the shelf anything wrong with it or should I just order something? The 42mm Mikuni flat slide is solid with varnish....the kit for that dude is ridiculous. Anyway here are the pics and thanks for the help in deciding to go for it.

p.s. is that a cover over the rear shock/spring? I've seen some with an exposed spring and some with the cover like this one...what gives?

Different types of shock. Looks like the updated 14.7" shock and mount, 16.5" is original on the the S1 IIRC. Nice looking bike! I dig the white on black.

Absolutely beautiful S1!

The belt looks too tight you may want to check that they need to be looser than what the book says.

Cheers

Great find!
Joe is right - the belt looks too tight.
The original tuber shocks had white exposed coil springs, pre-recall. That's why you see both. Also, some of the really nice aftermarket shocks also have the outer spring: AST, Penske.

Summer is coming. If the top end gaskets are not leaking badly I would just ride it until next winter. Rarely will they leak more than nuisance value. Nice looking bike.

In one of those "DAMHIK" moments, I totally agree with Essmjay. Just do the basics to get it set up for a great riding season. Tackle the deeper projects off-season, if/when they arise.

That's one beautiful bike you got. Congratulations. Is it the picture or you have got the rear rocker cover off the bike already? I would do both if it were me.

yeah Kalali the rear rocker box is off, it's sitting in the cardboard box in front of the bike. My friend stopped riding it back in 2003 because it was smoking. He pulled the exhaust and saw a trail of oil coming into the chamber from the exhaust valve guide on the rear head so he started to tear it down for valve seals. It has been sitting that way since. It shouldn't take very long to tear it down and re-gasket it...I have the tools and the time ; )

btw this will be my first v-twin bike....and even though my name is actually Harley, I've owned at least one of every major brand Japanese bike but never a Harley (not a cruiser fan)....my dad will be proud lol

yeah I think I'll keep the muffler....hellraged, it's the upgraded Buell "race" exhaust not exactly a stocker. I need to hurry up and order some parts. The combo of weather finally turning nice and a bike sitting in the garage is almost too much to handle...hah

Your friend included the carb support bracket right?
If not, DO NOT ride without it. Your motor will run really lean and carb WILL fall off.
Did you get the stock CV carb along with the parts box?

Very nice S1...

yeah the carb bracket is in the box too. I didn't get any of the stock parts. My friend bought the bike with all of the upgrades already done and didn't get the stock parts. I'm ordering the gasket set and a battery today, looking forward to making the poor thing run again : D

There are lots of things in that box. When I start the re-assembly process I'm sure I'll have to take pictures and ask "what is this and where/how does it go" lol

So it sounds like you'll need to take the head off the rear cylinder to do the valve guide.
BTW, unless I missed something this is the first time I'm reading about issues with valve guides in these bikes. Dropping a valve yes but a leaking valve guide is relatively rare.

If the valve seals are really bad it can look like the guide is bad. Check the guide to valve clearance if it meets spec install new seals and ride.
