My S2 belt says Sportster on it...

I would guess a 128 is a 128...unless the tooth pitch is different, and you'd notice that as soon as you tried to slide it on the pulley.

Believe there was one year that the XB's had a different belt pitch ???

The BELTS 40014-94Y had BUELL on it, the 40022-91 had HARLEY-DAVIDSN on it, and the XB G0500.1AAH each is 128 teeth ...

I think 03 is the oddball year.

'03 is the oddball; all the US tubers and sportsters and XBs (save the '03 and long swingarm models) used a 128t belt, all with the same tooth pitch. The long swingarm XBs have a 135t belt but it has the se tooth pitch as the 128t, so you can use it in situations that you need a few more teeth, like extended swingarms or larger pulleys.

The belt on my '99 X1 when I bought it used lasted 10 years. It's replacement didn't last 9 months, and the one after that barely a year. My problem has been the belts losing teeth. When the front pulley hits a toothelss spot, it spins and wears thru. What would cause a belt to lose teeth?!?!

How about this guess:

Rear belt sprocket is worn out from adjusting the drive belt by the service manual spec's !!!

DRIVE BELT Class 101, just PM me for a copy ...

So... which new pulley/belt should I get? If I have to replace the pulley, would going any smaller be much of an advantage?

Found P/N 40022-91 and G0500.AAH to be interchangeable; which is the KEVLAR belt?

Mstrfrz:

If you adjusted the DRIVE BELT per the HELP "INFO" "i" sent you is correct it will be very loose ...

It you still do not believe, just get two 200 pound riders to sit on you bike to find out for yourself !!!

Relax, all of us tuber old schoolers run them "scary loose". As long as you followed Buellistic's procedure you are good.
If it doesn't jump teeth on hard acceleration in first, your good to go.

Roger that. Thanks for the encouragement. Short of running out of gas, busted belts are the only thing that have left me stranded!

'Scary loose' seems to be the ticket!
