Hi Everyone,

My primary chain tensioner broke while I was riding last month. I pulled the primary cover and replaced it and while I was in there I replaced the detent plate and clip and tapped the pins back in on the shift drum.

I finally got it all back together and now the clutch won't fully disengage.(I think I said that right when I pull in the clutch it still wants to go) I have adjusted the clutch screw every wich way and nothing helps. Any ideas of what I screwed up?

First make sure you adjusted the clutch correct. With the bike level and the inspection cover off, loosen your clutch cable and back out the ramp adjuster screw and then lightly seat it. Before you make the rest of your screw adjustment make sure you pull the clutch ramp all the way toward the back of the bike. Then make the standard book adjustments making sure you don't allow the clutch ramp to work it's way forward again during the ramp screw adjustment.

Test it out again. Then if you problems still exist you might be the victim of the infamous clutch spring plate losing it's rivets. This is the plate buried in the very middle of the clutch pack. When this happens the small spring steel pieces can float fore and aft of the original position. They stack up against each other creating thick spots around the circumference of the plate. This has the same effect as a feathered clutch. It makes clutch adjustments hit or miss and they won't hold over the test of time.

I adjusted the clutch again with no success. The clutch was working perfectly before the chain tensioner broke and I pulled everything apart. It seemed pretty straight forward with the clutch basket removal.

You may have left a spacer out,you need to pull the clutch pack and make sure the inner and outer hubs aren't bound together. If your sure the adj. is right. Ya I know it sucks.

Did you adjust the clutch CABLE? Everything you've talked about here has been in the primary and on the clutch pack itself...

Step 1 - take all tension out of the cable by shortening the adjuster on the cable.

Step 2 - adjust the screw on the pack

Step 3 - set tension and lever position by way of the cable adjustment

Thanks everybody! I think the issue was that all of the oil had drained out from the clutch. I decided to ride it around the neighborhood to see what happened when it warmed up. After it warmed up no issues.
