I'm trying to get some help for a local Buell owner. You should know he's a Democrat, but don't let that stop you from offering suggestions : )

I'm pretty handy with XBs and 1125s, I just don't have much knowledge on the X1.

This was posted on another forum:

I was in Mansfield today visiting the folks and my ol' mans Buell has been acting up for awhile. It's a 1999 X1 Lightning with 4092 miles on it.

Symptoms:
- Rough idle (assuming it idles, most of the time it dies after a few seconds)
- Sputters / spits / coughs during operation
- Won't get above 4k rpm no matter how hard I wrench the throttle
- Basically runs like crap under any load

Note: We had the airbox off during these tests and it makes a horrendous chuffing / popping sound when getting in/out of the throttle. Is there something about those airboxes that they need to run restricted? ie. not open to the air?

Things we've checked -
*My brother told me he cleaned the spark plugs and plug wires have been checked
*Removed the fuel tank and checked the fuel pump resistance (approx. 2.6 ohms, seems normal? Should be pulling 3A @ 14V -- 2.6ohms makes it close, so it's about half the resistance it should be). I did note that the fuel pump sounds odd when it primes itself before the bike starts.
*Resistance of both fuel injectors = 13.6 ohms
*TPS sensor resistance from 800 ohm to 2.1 kohm
*Replaced fuel in fuel tank with some VP Blue my dad had lying around (bad gas ruled out)
*Fuel filter OK
*Held the Infrared Temp gun to both headers about the same distance from the exhaust (near the head) and they read about the same temp (260*), so we ruled out "single cylinder operation"

I still think it's the fuel pump, or maybe the engine temp sensor. I took it for a ride down the driveway and back (approx 1/2 mile) and it finally threw some codes. Put a Jumper on the diagnostic port... threw blink codes 11 (TPS sensor), 13 (O2 sensor), and 33 (Fuel Pump).

Thanks in advance.

How do you KNOW the fuel filter is OK? It's downstream of the pressure test port and can be quite clogged--and still throwing appropriate fuel pressure.

Check for intake leaks? What's the AFV?

Check your timing.
Remember that the sensor in the "points cover" tells the fuel injectors when the squirt will be as well as the ignition.

It really sounds like your timing is off.

Check the basics before splitting the atom : )

Check for intake seal leaks and what is TPS set at? What is fuel pressure? Just had one here with bad fuel pump and clogged injector from sitting too long.

Inspect the throttle body butterfly shaft for crack/break. My 99 had similar symptoms when it gave it up.

Do you have access to any software diagnostic tools like ECMSPY or VDSST? If not, then you need one. ECMSPY is free.
Anyway, if it were me, I would start with a TPS reset. Of course you first have to rule out mechanical causes like bad grounds, chaffed wires, leaking intake seals, etc.

Good tips!

An intake leak would need to be pretty severe to cause these symptoms, correct? If present, it should be easy to detect with carb cleaner or WD.

Timing could be the issue.

I have used ECMSpy to reset the TPS on XBs. I'm guessing it's the same connector on an X1. Where is the connector located on the X1?

My 2000 X1 has the connector on the right side just behind the steering neck.
It has a little anchor on the frame to hold it there.

Connector is the same : )

check the heat and air FI injectors sensors. I think I have an intake leak on my X1R after I ride if for a while the idle goes up and down and nothing else then the idle smooths back out in neutral.

Kay, does this happen when the handle bars are turned? (cables?)
