Hello, I have a 98 s3 and I recently replaced a broken speedometer cable. The old cable broke off probably due to incorrect routing. Anyway, prior to placing the wheel end of the cable into the drive unit, I peeked inside the drive unit and noticed a metal piece that rotated 360 degrees and I assumed it was part of the drive unit. When I installed the speedo cable, I installed the wheel end first. In doing so, I placed the cable into the drive unit and rotated the cable, threading it into the drive unit. After threaded, I tightened the nut, then routed the cable the correct way, and tightened the cable’s speedo end into the speedometer per my manual. Since installing the new cable my tach has been bouncing up and down erratically on occasion, and the tach NEVER bounced until after I installed the new speedo cable. Based on my research on BADWEB, I believe either the speedo cable drive unit (the piece that fits onto the wheel) is bad, or I did not install the speedo cable correctly into the drive unit. What are your thoughts on my problem? What is the correct way to install the speedo cable into the drive unit? My manual is silent to this and I may have improperly installed the cable into the drive unit. How do you know if the drive unit is bad? Is that metal piece that rotates 360 degrees in the drive unit supposed to be there? I will take the speedo cable out tomorrow and ride the bike to confirm that it's not the tachometer that's the problem. Thanks in advance! |

I don't know about the part that rotates that you speak of...it's been a while since I broke one (that's gonna jinx it, I'm sure) but I can look at the spare drive I have on the wall. Whenever I replace a cable or a drive, I loosen the front axle so the drive itself can spin around the axle, allowing the cable hookup to position itself at the most natural angle for the cable so it's not pinched or tweaked. Loosen axle, install cable completely (including any cable ties or clips on the forks and/or fender), grab front brake, pogo front end up and down a couple times to help it all seat, then tighten the axle to lock it all in place. I'm at a loss about the tach thing, though. |

The rotating tab is what turns the drive. Mine broke off, and no speedo until I replaced it. There are 2 plastic bushings that have to go with this. I found a diagram with everything you need on the shop manual for an S1 that is on this site. Your tach shouldn't have anything to do with a cable operated speedometer. |

The tach should have nothing to do with the speedo. (or did you mean the speedo is jumping around) Also when installing the speedo cable make sure the forks are fully extended(jack it up)This method will eliminate any kinking at the speedo drive area if the speedo drive is oriented correctly also. This method eliminated my cable breaking problems} |

Tach is bouncing?? Nothing to do with speedo cable. Check grounds and tach signal wiring. The drive tang goes into slot on wheel and cable should be coming out at about parallel with the ground. |
