before the oil change it would leak alittle from the drain bolt for the primary. i dont know what kinda oil it had before its the first oil change ive done since i had this thing... i deciced to go with rotella after reading about all the good things people had to say about... i changed it both in the primary n engine.. now not only is it leaking from the drain bolt, it leaks from the sensor under the oil filter and i noticed it above the starter, and from some other spot on the right side cant tell excactly where its coming from. how do i remdy these leaks, and should i stop using rotella?? | ||

Get your Teflon tape out.Be careful and don,t use too much.It,s not the oil.Pull Some GGGGGGGs Butch  | ||

Please PLEASE. The teflon tape is OK but, try the Teflon that is in a bottle and you use a brush. It really works so much better. Been using it for more than 30 years. Actually try the tape and let us know 6 months later. Good luck. | ||

I agree, most probably worn threads or an overtweaked bolt, I've used the tape on my old Guzzi, but that is more like a tractor. | ||

This is only passing on hearsay, so take it FWIW: I have heard that after years of dino oil, a nice, sealing sludge helps keep things sealed up, and that a change to a more modern oil, like a synthetic with additives, can clear out this sludge and open things up that were, for better or worse, sealed before. Some say synthetic oils make some seals and gaskets leak; others say it's not the oil, it's the cleanup job the oil does. | ||

If you do not already have the improved gaskets on the primary cover, the gear box (cam) cover and the starter, then it was/is just a matter of time before they leak. Clean oil with fresh detergent may have been the trigger, but it isn't the problem. Get everything clean enough to tell where it is coming from and consider other upgrades when you have things off (primary tensioner, oil pump drive gear, etc.) | ||

I don't recall reading anyone recommending a 15-40 weight oil in their engines... As for the leaks, it would be highly unusual for ALL the gaskets start leaking at the same time unless there was some issue with the oil weight. Rotella is a decent brand. | ||

I suspect you have a leaking rocker box, and had it for a while, and just are noticing. It happens... no big deal to fix. | ||

Make sure you haven't inadvertently plugged up your engine breathers. That will cause excessive leaks in your engine. | ||

When I started Riding 1959-1970 air cooled bikes only used Non-Detergent Oil.Detergent then use to foam and destroyed air cooled engs.Used straight oil changed every 500 mi.Times are better with syth by far in extreme heat,this stuff does not brake down.6,000 oil changes I like,+ less wear!!!  | ||

6000 miles is probably right on the ragged edge for an air cooled motor... If I was going to run intervals that long, I'd drop the $25 and have blackstone labs analyze the used oil and make sure it's still intact. | ||
