The weather if finally getting nice enough to ride. I bought my X1 this winter so I've just now gotten to start riding it. It starts and idles ok but just doesn't have any power. I've added a V&H muffler and a Oval style air intake with a K&N filter. I cleaned the throttle body and checked the plugs. I can barely get it to redline in first and it won't even make it that high in any other gear. I've done a little research and it looks like I need a TPS reset if not more. Dealership or ECMspy? Can the reset be done anyway else? And is ECMspy still available? Anything else I should look at?

Ecm spy is available from American Sport Bike or Ebay..
easy to do yourself with ECmspy.

Have you checked your exhaust headers are still tight, had a prob with mine running rough,ended up being the rear header was loose ,sucking air in past the O2 sensor.

I got ECMspy and hooked it up. No codes. Did the TPS reset. AFV value of 129. All exhaust connections are tight. Took it out for a 10 miles low rpm ride. Still no power. Try to go full throttle in any gear and it acts like your not doing anything. Sometimes I get a small hickup or backfire. Got back and checked the AFV value still at 129. Checked the plugs and this is what I found(see pics below). Front header pipe much cooler than rear header pipe. Plugged or bad fuel injector??? What are your thoughts?

Try new plugs, could be wires. Might just be a foulded plug.

First of all your AFV is way too high telling you that your fuel maps (at least the rear one with the O2 sensor) are too lean. With the V&H and the K&N you need to either get a Race ECM or load Race fuel/timing maps onto your Stock ECM. After that reset your AFV=100 and see what happens. Now this may not address your issue but will put you on the right footing to start troubleshooting things like bad intake seals, injector seals, etc.

Run a log and send it to me. Best to do is to start logging with a cold engine and then ride it until the error occurs. Let it idle for a few seconds befor you stop logging.

Check cylinder head temp cold against current air temp should be about the same
If you can borrow an IR hand held check the head temp agains the HH

there are a number of other issues

air leaks can cause the issue, as well as what has been put forth about injector malfunction.

if the rear is leaking air and the ECM compensates that will drive the AFV up and
drive the front rich.

any tuber with intake seals that are more than 2 or 3 years old these are suspect.

Thanks for all the inputs. I'll start with the easy stuff like new plugs and wires. It can't hurt and it's cheap.

I'm sure I'll need to load a new map to match the intake and exhaust changes I made.

Id073897, how do you run a log? Can you use ECMspy or do I need some other software?

You need to make it RIGHT before you start tuning with ECMspy. At that AFV, with the mods you have, there is SOME OTHER ISSUE.

My guess? Fuel Filter!!!! ALL the signs point to fuel filter issues.

I agree. I'm not going to do any messing around with the ECU until I've ruled out everything else. I've ridden bikes with poor maps before and they still run halfway decent just not ideal. Fuel filter is another thing on my list.

Id is referring to "datalogging" using the ECMSPY. You need to read the tuning guide to better understand the process and the needed software. In a nutshell, you hook up your laptop to the ECM with the ECMSPY running, put it in a backback and ride for a while. The software will collect the data in realtime and tell you what your map should look like. In theory it is as close as you can get to tuning your bike without a dyno. Rule out all the "physical" stuff first. And you're right about the bike running at least half decent with slightly off fuel maps...Unless they are way off...

my guess, injector o-ring. spray around it with carb spray & see if the idle changes

Before you start wrenching you must check all sensor input, otherwise it's just a waste of effort and time. Your AFV is way off, this surely indicates an error and fuel distribution seems very unequal to front and rear. Because of that I would not expect a failed sensor (would hit both cylinders the same way), but a fuel deployment problem with the rear cylinder.

You know twins don't have much power when there only running on one cylinder. I checked for intake leaks, didn't find any. Ran some seafoam through it to clean it out, didn't help much. Checked the plugs again, front was wet as can be and front cylinder and header were cold. Started it, pulled off the front plug wire, no change. Took the front plug back out cleaned it real good, cleaned the wire contacts and just like that it runs like it should. Still going to change the plugs, wires and fuel filter. Now that it's running decent I can start playing with ECMspy. Thanks for the help guys. I'm sure I'll need more.

Here's an update now that it seems to be running good. Both plugs look much better but still a little lean, yellowish color. After I went for a ride the AFV reset itself to 117. So I used ECMspy and reset it to 100. Went for another ride mostly maintaining 2500-3000rpms, got home rechecked the AFV and now it's 90. What is this telling me? And is there a place on this forum to download different maps to try out?

What is this telling me?

The bike's configuration does not fit the map it's running. You could try to adjust your map according to the EGO corr. applied in learning mode, but for that you have to identify data with active learning mode in your logs. This can not be done with MegaLogViewer.
