I noticed today without my helmet that same annoying tapping coming from the heads,with the helmet it's faint but there.It's not detonation or spark knock but lifter type noise.I guess this is common on the Buells models,if it is I guess I will have to get a D&D to drown out the tap

Normal noise, it is suprising how much sound that engine makes without a helmet on, especially if you have the stock exhaust.
