I have a chance to get a 97 lightning or a 00 cyclone... S-1 has 10k on it, all carbon fiber stuff, mukuni carb, exhaust, race ignition, two sets of seats and rear fenders, all kinds of custom stuff. I can get it for 4500 bucks.... The cyclone is very clean 7k miles, V&H exhaust and kn filter and few add ons. price for this is 3k... I'm looking for a good commuter and fun bike. I also want something I can take my G/f on for rides. What is a better option for me in your guys opinions? Thanks! | ||

for the GF, better the M2, since it has a larger and more comfortable seat. in my opinion, the S1 is sexier and more aggressive, it has more valuable accessories. I'd sacrifice the Gf and buy the S1 though... | ||

Personally, I don't care for the look of the M2, but is a bit more practical. I find the S1 to be a dead sexy bike. | ||

I bought a 200 M2 this spring and couldn't be happier. I like longer rides and appreciate the M2 seat and riding position. It has good power and handling for me. | ||

Does anyone make a more comfortable seat for the s-1 possibly to help for longer rides? I know the S-1 im looking at has atleast 3-4k in extra on it... I do like the cyclone but at 3k bucks, it needs a tach (150), different color paint (250 bucks), tank emblems (75 bucks)...So i will quickly have 3500 in the cyclone so the S-1 is really only a 1k bucks more... | ||

IMHO, the 1997 S1 !!! "WHY", because with a little TUNING it would be TORQUE MONSTER for a small dollar out lay ... If my 1997 S3T ever wears out, this is the plan for it ... | ||

I have a 98 S1W in the garage. I love it. It *is* bad attitude. Rude. Uncivilized. Fast. Handles great. Looks dead sexy. No bones about it, it was created for one purpose and one purpose only. That purpose was *not* comfort, though. We also have the wife's '01 M2L in the garage (and my first bike was a '99 M2). Docile without being boring (cam profiles are different), easy to manage, perfectly content to lope along in traffic as well as hammering through twisties. Comfy seat. Flickable handling. Great manners. Decent for 2-up (it's no Uly...but it works). Much as I love the S1...for what you say you're looking for, I'd go M2. Just keep an eye on that V&H, they like to fall apart. DAMHIK. Corbin used to make a seat for the S1...but no more. I think you'd have to go custom. But...for what it's worth (and to help understand what the bike was created for), I believe even *Erik* has been quoted as calling it a "one cheek seat" on the S1. | ||

I say go for the m2, if your looking for pain you can throw on the 97-98 m2 tail to give it that slimmer look. | ||

M2 will have the same top end as the S1W and you can easily switch out the M2 cams if you want to move the power up the rev band further. Depends on driving style. There are lots of M2 and X1 Buells to be had and you should not have to buy one in need of paint, etc. Find one that is in great shape with mods that you like. Since buying my M2 I have acquired a used race intake, new race ignition and supertrapp slip-on for very reasonable prices. Now if the comparison was a clean S1W I might sacrifice some comfort but this is a buyers market. | ||

It depends on how tough the GF is. The Mrs. and I have done quite a few 2-300 mile rides on my S-1 before I converted it to a single seater. The extra attitude of the S-1 would outweigh the niceties of the M-2. It's your $$$ and GF so chose wisely and good luck. | ||

If you want to look at it, get the S1. If you want to ride it, get the M2. If you want to do both, get the M2 and customize to your aesthetic satisfaction. | ||

Unless you and your girl are small in stature and hard in ass get the M2. I like the S1...it just suits me...but bicycles and dirt bikes also feel comfortable to me. My wife has done some 300-500 mile days on the back of the S1 but neither of us have enjoyed it. The M2 is more civilized, practical, and about as capable. Hot rod, S1. Standard, M2. | ||

I think the M2 is a hot rod!! What I think would improve the M2's looks and still retain the two up seating for our significant others would be a color matched, fiberglass cover that fastens over the passenger section when not in use. This could create a smooth rear line to the bike. I believe that the X1 had something similar. Surely one of you handy guys could make up something like that.  | ||

I thought the gunfighter seat from corbin gave it a sleeker look, while being more comfortable. Im going to have loren do my g&l skinny m2 seat much like a gunfighter where teh back tapers to the bodywork so its sleeker looking. | ||

What Ratbuell said!! I have an S1W with the corbin two-up seat. To put it bluntly, it sucks for touring!!! But I consider it like a '69 Camaro; Pure bad azz, unadulterate, no bones thrills!!! | ||

I think of an X1 having the "soul" of an S1 and the relative comfort of an M2. I've ridden the S1 and M2 very briefly so this is purely based on a first impression. | ||

I had my seat (m2)refoamed about 5 yr ago with landau top foam( firmest he had) for $65,my wife has an sheepskin over the rear portion,just added the s3bar from ABS for $55 before our socal ride,about 1400miles. 6ft3+,225lbs, wife 100lbs,60lbs of saddlebags and tankbag.had a great time both of us,8days. get the info, do the maintainence,ride it whereever you want to go.We ride regularly 150-200 miles 3 weekends a month. | ||

Rat and Rick both said it very well. Perhaps it's because the S1 was the first Buell I saw and loved from the start, but it speaks to me of the soul of the brand than the M2, like and angry pit-bull or pinscher - compared to a slightly tired and fat rottweiler. So for me, I got the fat dog and put it on an exercise plan. I rode both and hated the original S1 seat (like Rick_a I'm pretty comfortable on a bicycle seat), it is fairly miserable, can only imagine trying to ride as a passenger, she'd really have to love you to spend much time back there. | ||

had a 97 M2 and now a 96 S1. Gotta say, neither was made for comfort. But the S1 is a gorgeous piece of machinery. It was not made for comfort. The later M2s and X1s were made for comfort. If my wife wanted to ride, I would go for an X1, nice look plus comfort....thank god she does not want to ride with me | ||

My 2002 M2 is all-day comfortable. It looks pretty good too. If you are going to have just one, make it an M2. | ||

For what you want to do, the M2 is going to be your best option. Commuting: More comfortable riding position, big soft seat. Fun: Even with my tired beat up motor, my 98m2 was still a blast to ride. Can't wait to get her back from the shop all freshened up. Girlfriend: If she worth keeping around, and you want to have her ride more than once, you'll be happy you got the M2. Now if you want to be single forget everything i just said and get the S1  | ||

I wouldn't call an X1 made for comfort. My wife hates riding pillion on the X1. There really isn't much there at all for two up. |
