Hello,

Posted a similar thread in uly section.

I'm looking at getting a 2007 xb12x, or a beautiful updated 1999 S3T. I plan on a lot of highway and street use. I will be doing a lot of camping, but not to far away from pavement. Some dirt roads, but not a whole lot.

The 2007 is a demo bike with low miles, and comes with bags, but no trunk.

The S3T is flat out beautiful, with all the gear. Has a new top end, and is in great shape.

The uly would cost $850.00 more in total. Insurance is $100.00 a year more. The loan on the Uly is a lot better though; better rate, more years to pay.

What is the better bike to tour on? What is more comfortable on real long runs? I'm 5'10" 220, if that helps.

Thanks for the advice!

Gabe

Gabe while I am an old school fan the uly if not abused will require less effort

tubers require work.
2 up unless you and the passenger are average to small in stature, will overload the machine with any gear,

I hate this but the uly is a better choice for practical reasons, if the s3 is a sundy driver 1 up camping touring solo it would be fine,

+1 Oldog My 99 S3T is not so happy with two up. My 200lb tush plus the wife is more than it's sprung for. Although I've been told proper shock and front fork springs will change that.

I had an S3 before my Uly. No question the S3 (or T) is a much prettier bike than the Uly. OTOH the Uly does a better job of isolating the engine vibes and has a MUCH plusher ride than the S3 due to the long-travel suspension.

I do think the front isolators on tubers are more prone to failing from two-up riding, and there have been a rash of isolator failures in recent months (the latest replacements don't appear to be up to snuff).

Have a 1997 S3T with 108K plus miles on it ...

NO ISOLATOR PROBLEMS AFTER INSTALLING REAR ISOLATORS L050.9R and L504.9L ...

Replace the FRONT ISOLATOR once because of the EARLY OEM REAR ISOLATORS PN 47564-86B retro fitted from the BIG TWIN Soft Tail were not heavy duty enough to ride TWO-UP which caused the front isolator to go bad prematurely ...

Put a 500 pound rated spring on the rear shock(still running the OEM shock the came on it) for my wife and "i" ...

Put Road Race Kit springs and heavier oil in front forks ...

Plus, up'ed the tire pressure ...

SET UP SUSPENSION FOR RIDING TWO-UP ...

Even like it set up that way for riding solo ...

I have a 99 S3T and 08 Uly.
The Uly is more versatile and refined.
The S3T more hooligan.
Can you get both?
If you can only get one-get the Uly.
On road-off road the Uly runs like a cheetah-climbs
like a monkey.

Whisperstealth, There was an updated S3T on eBay a week ago, is that the S3T you are considering?

I looked at it. Had a lamenar lip, heated grips, bunch of other stuff, went for 4000 something.

The one I was REALLY looking at was one Buellsrule has. It is awesome! BEAUTIFUL and full of class. It was a VERY hard choice. In the end I went with a Uly. Mostly to do with:

A: Advice given here on BWB

B: Bank would only give me a two year, 10.5% rate on the loan. Harley: $5,500 off retail, four year, 7.5% rate, and only 15 bucks more a month. Harley's insurance got me 900 closer a year than Progressive.

Sure I have to pay twice as long, but I'm getting a new Uly at about 35-40 more a month over all.

I have a 2000 S3 that I bought in 2006, and I bought the 1999 S3T on eBay that went for $4050 this month. Got to get it shipped from Cleveland to Houston. With the bargain basement pricing on Ulys, I plan on buying a Uly touring if they are still obtainable in December. Houston Buell dealer is advertising them for $7300. Don't think I will keep the 2000 S3.
