My bike is acting up after a month of running great. A helicoil stripped out on a header stud. I just had it welded and retapped.

The bike ran good for 5 minutes then it started acting up. It was bogging down, I figured it was a semi loose connection to the battery (I didn't fully tighten it after I had it welded)
Tightened it up, took it around the block and it was fine. Went for a ride and after 5 minutes it was bogging again. I tried keeping the RPM steady, but it kept cutting out. I'd hear pops and it was unresponsive.

I thought the AFV got thrown out of wack with the exhaust leak and a reset would take care of it. Hooked up ECMSPY, burned the last good config I had and reset the AFV to 100% (I was thinking everything got reset when I disconnected the battery during the welding)

Bike ran fine for 5 min then the same thing would happen. Went back, disconnected the battery and checked the spark plugs. (the plugs and wires were replaced at the buell dealer maybe 3000 miles ago) The plugs were pretty black but not horrible. The gap was .045.

I put the bike back and the same crap. I tried keeping it light and steady, but the pops and unresponsiveness kept coming back. No red flags when I hooked it up to the computer again.

Any suggestions?

Could the fuel tank vent hose have gotten pinched when you put the tank back on? Try pulling the vent hose off at the tank fitting and see if that takes care of it.

Did you ever replace the head temp sensor?
If not, that may be a good place to start.

I had a zip tie on the hose connected to where you fill the gas tank. I cut that off to remove the tank. I didn't put a new one on yet. Could it be that simple?

Head temp sensor: that was my next step after last time but it was running great for a while. I'm trying to avoid throwing more money at the bike on parts I don't need. Hopefully my friend has that tool to get it off. I'm trying to sell it and I know I'm not going to get anything near what I want.

So was the "vent hose" connected back to the tank or not? I think pinching (or removing) that hose should cause some issues but it should have shown up right after you took it off or cut it, not long after.

It is connected loosely. It just slid onto the 90 degree connector coming off the metal part of the gas tank (where you fill the tank).

The end of the hose that connects to the top of the tank is slightly expanded. It easily slides onto that connection. I never put a new zip-tie on it. I really really really hope its something simple like that

Its just a vent hose. Would that really cause the bike to die out? I'd rather not risk taking it out when I dont need to.

How do you check to see if a head temp sensor is bad? I know you need the cut out for the wire but what size socket do I need?

It's easy to check the breather.
open the tank and blow in the tube.
If you hear your breath coming into the tank, it's working.

The breather would really effect the bike that much? I was talking to my two mechanically inclined friends and they practically laughed at me when I said a vent hose could be affecting this. If it was pressurized that much, there should be a special connection there - rather than a simple zip tie.

Like I said, if it really would effect the bike I'll try it out. I chased the line and there were no kinks. It went all the way back along the left side and is just an open tube under the starter.
I just don't want to take it out and limp home again - I'm sure that not good to keep running the bike like that.

I don't have first hand experience but based on what I have read here, apparently a clogged vent tube can create driveability problems. Mine is quite tight on that nipple with the stock little clamp.
Now whether or not that is your ONLY issue, well, there is only one way to find out...

I found a zip tie was a little tight on the hose and removed it. I put a zip tie at the gas tank and took the bike out but the problems resurfaced.

I guess the head temp sensor is next. I just called up the closest Buell dealer - $80 for part Y0605.K I won't get it until Thursday.
I have Harley dealers that are closer and tried to see if they had anything with that part #. The first guy I talked to said it's a Buell specific part and I need to get it from Buell. It mounts differently than a HD part. Is that BS?

So Y0605.K is $80 at the dealer and the same at American Sport Bike (http://www.americansportbike.com/shoponline/ccp0-p rodshow/17035.html)

Iron Machine is showing part # 32564-99YC for $45 and says it's the same for 99-02 X1 and 03-09 XBs. (American Sport Bike showed # 17035 when you find it in the XB and X1 section.)


I goggled 32564-99YC and came across a post on another message board. It said a faulty sensor would throw code 14 on XBs.

I doubled checked ECMspy and no codes were thrown.

Any word on the socket size? I want to be prepared when it comes in. I want to see if my friend has it in his set. If not I'll get a socket and cut the groove in it.

Size should be a 1/2" '99-'00 are next to the rear sparkplug and easy to get to, '01-'02 are down the chimney so you have to remove the fuel tank.

Looks like on your '02 you have to do some work to get to the sensor, as Blake mentioned.
