Hi All,

Just wanted to see what the best oil is to run in the EVO engine. Right now I'm using 15w-50 Mobil 1 (not the v-twin oil) in both engine and trans. Before I used harley oil and after the switch I noticed the engine ran better hot and the trans shifted smoother with less false neutrals.

What oil would you recommend?

What you are running now is a great selection.

Only suggestion is to use the Dyna sized oil filter rather than the XL.

There will be lots of opinions, but you are running what the factory stipulates and the correct viscosity - API C oil.

The TRANSMISSION will shift smoother and work better all around if the CLUTCH is adjusted correctly and the PRIMARY CHAIN(3/4 inch on the chain tight spot) and the DRIVE BELT are adjusted correctly(INFO if you want it) ...

IMHO, it is better to run the same oil in the transmission as used in the the engine ...

WHY YOU ASK ???, well if the crank shaft oil seal goes bad the engine/transmission oil will mix ...

First 60K was on H-D 20W50 DYNO OIL and the remainder to 108,359.3 miles as of th last ride on H-D 20W50 SYN3 ...

Mobile V, 15-50 synth. which feels like Harley oil ,trans Red-Line High-Impact(Thick Red Paint) trans.Switched to syth. after 15,000 miles after break-in.S2T over 124,000 miles,S3 over 68,000 miles.No rebuilds and they do not use oil.I change at 5,000 mile intra. + also use Dyna filter.Both bikes sound and run Great!!!

Crank-seal goes engine oil leaks to primary I know,Red-Line trans oil shows a lighter shade of red as engine oil dilutes it.

And fills trans-primary comes out breather hose and makes a mess on back of bike finish.

Butch,

Caution! Red-Line high impact can cause your clutch to malfunction. The suspended solids in that formulation accumulate and build up all around the clutch basket, eventually causing problems with clutch actuation. Red-Line themselves recommend against using that product in Buell and Sportster transmissions as they include the wet clutch.

Their "Shockproof" products are for use only in situations where the clutch is excluded from the lubrication system. For instance with a big twin where primary/clutch lube is separate from the tranny lube, it's okay to use it in the tranny.

Here's one thread talking about the issue that shows a photo of what can happen. Others have encountered a major buildup of the shockproof goo on the stator as well. Not good.

I,ve used Red-Line High impact for 109,000 miles on S2T and shifts easy also original clutch ,Also S3 , 48,000 miles no trouble ethere!Blake

Blake what you say makes sents!I found it in Bad-Web about 2000 recommended for better shifting and worked great!but realize even Red-Line doesn,t rec. it Now but my Buells run great!I,ve got 4 qts of it at $14 a qt.I,ll use at my own risk.Thank you for warning!

When I rebuilt my tranny after using Shockproof I found small white residue under all my needle bearings. : (

If the residue doesn't cause damage itself, it will prevent much needed oil from getting to them...

I,ve had my S2T trans apart too to put in a new trans output shaft.No white that means water to me.while apart found no wear either.

I used the Redline for a while too, but when I was changing the crank seal the stator was covered in a gooey mess. Didn't seem like a good idea at the time. I now run the HD Formula with no apparent problems.

BUELLers:

"i" would run CAR AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID(MERCON "V"{5}) before running that "CRAP" !!!

"BUT", my ride is not a racer ...

With a 108K PLUS miles on my OEM Transmission it is well broke in now and shifts very good !!!

"YES", "i" have had to put a couple of minor parts in because of my #13 boot ...

MAY THE LONG LASTING BUELL BE WITH YOU !!!
