On my bike, a 1995, the back of the guages is removed, the gauge then slips through the hole and the back is replaced to clamp it on. Forgive me if that is making assumptions.
Alternately, my speedo is driven by a cable from the front wheel, as is the 1997. The part number you gave is a -97. I think a 2001 will be all electric, so maybe the body is shaped differently, i.e. wider and, I think shallower. In which case you would need something with a part number that doesn't end in 97.
